Jammu Airport To Celebrate Yatri Suvidha Diwas Amid Major Infrastructure Expansion

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jammu Airport, one of North India’s strategically important aviation hubs, will observe Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15 with a series of passenger-centric, community outreach and environmental initiatives aimed at enhancing traveller experience and recognising the contribution of aviation stakeholders.

The airport, jointly managed by the Airports Authority of India and the Indian Air Force, has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, with major upgrades in infrastructure, connectivity and passenger amenities.

According to officials, the celebrations will reflect the airport’s continued focus on sustainability, community engagement and improved services, reinforcing its role as a key driver of regional connectivity and development.

Capacity And Infrastructure Witness Significant Growth

Jammu Airport’s passenger handling capacity has increased from one million passengers per annum in 2014 to 2.6 million at present. A new terminal building under development is expected to further enhance capacity to 4.5 million passengers annually.

The terminal area has expanded from 7,000 square metres in 2014 to 14,500 square metres and is projected to reach around 40,000 square metres after the completion of the new terminal complex.

Aircraft parking stands have increased from seven to 13 following the development of a new civil enclave apron, while the runway was extended by around 1,300 feet in 2021, enabling operations of larger Airbus A321 aircraft and eliminating previous load restrictions.

The airport is also being upgraded from CAT-I to CAT-II landing capability, which will improve operations during low-visibility conditions.

Other infrastructure additions include a dedicated helicopter parking stand and link taxiway commissioned in 2019 and a domestic cargo terminal with a handling capacity of 100 tonnes per month that became operational in January 2022.

Passenger Facilities And Sustainability Measures Expanded

Passenger amenities have expanded considerably over the years. From having no aerobridges in 2014, the airport now operates three aerobridges, with six more planned in the upcoming terminal.

Facilities such as Digi Yatra, the UDAN Yatri Cafe, AVSAR assistance services, Flybrary, free Wi-Fi and dedicated arrangements for children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities are currently available.

Security infrastructure has also been strengthened with the installation of the Under Vehicle Surveillance System and the Integrated Perimeter Security System in 2024 to enhance monitoring and perimeter protection.

On the sustainability front, rooftop solar power capacity has increased from 300 kWp in 2022 to 400 kWp in 2023. The airport has also earned GRIHA 4-star certification and undertaken plantation drives and waste management initiatives.

Community Outreach To Mark Yatri Suvidha Diwas

Jammu Airport has expanded regional connectivity through direct flights to major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Leh and Chandigarh. Helicopter services to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Bhawan have further improved access for pilgrims.

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, the airport has supported healthcare and education projects, including the provision of ambulances to SMGS Hospital and educational equipment to local institutions.

To mark Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15, passengers will be welcomed at the airport through a series of activities, including the collective singing of Vande Mataram, recognition of frontline aviation workers and women professionals, blood donation and medical camps, plantation drives and educational programmes for students.

Officials said the celebrations underline Jammu Airport’s commitment to improving passenger experience while promoting sustainability and strengthening community engagement as the airport continues its expansion journey.
