Jaipur’s SMS Hospital on Heatwave Alert, Dedicated ICU Ready for Emergencies

With an increase in temperature and heat wave across Rajasthan, hospitals across the state are preparing to handle cases of heat-related illness. The biggest government hospital in the state Sawai Man Singh Hospital has already made special arrangements in order to fight the heatstroke and dehydration cases.

Throwing light on the preparations Dr. Deepak Maheshwari, Principal and Controller of Sawai Man Singh Medical College and hospital said, “SMS hospital has a dedicated ward and ICU for heatwave-related patients. We have appointed a nodal officer and specialized medical team to make sure that heatstroke cases are handled timely.” He noted that no heatstroke cases have been reported till now, but yet the hospital is fully prepared.

Requesting vulnerable groups to avoid going out in the afternoon when the heatwave is harsh, Dr. Maheshwari advised people to stay covered, prefer full sleeves and remain hydrated with water, coconut water, juices and any form of fluid like chach and lassi also works. “Especially children and elders with pre-existing health conditions take special care and precaution.”

Heatwave in North India

North India continues to sizzle under the grip of heatwaves. On Wednesday some parts of the Capital city Jaipur recorded a maximum temperature of 41°C and many districts remained at 40°C mark. The Met department declares a heatwave when the temperature is at least 5°C above the normal and remains in the same condition for at least five consecutive days. On Wednesday temperature remained normal in most of the places, only Chittorgarh recorded a slight rise of around 2.5°C above normal. A warning has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) that the heatwave conditions would intensify in the state in coming days, especially in the Western Rajasthan starting May 1 to May 3, night would be warmer.
