Iran has issued a strong warning stating that any Israeli assault on Beirut would carry “grave consequences” and might lead to a full-scale war. This declaration was made amidst ongoing diplomatic communications between Tehran and Washington, as US President Donald Trump expressed hopeful sentiments regarding negotiations with Iran.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, indicated in remarks reported by Tasnim news agency that Tehran will not remain passive in the event of an attack on the Lebanese capital. He added that the Iranian military has been placed on full alert to prepare for a potential response to Israeli threats against Beirut’s southern suburbs.
These comments from Araghchi follow claims made by Trump, who suggested that he has received commitments from both Israel and Hezbollah to cease hostilities. He described this situation as a vital diplomatic breakthrough, potentially averting a broader Israeli operation in Lebanon.
Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts
Araghchi mentioned that channels of dialogue between Iran and the United States remain open, although significant progress has yet to be made in their discussions. Both parties are reportedly examining draft texts that have been exchanged recently.
A spokesperson for the Iranian negotiating team, communicating with Fars news agency, confirmed that Tehran has not yet provided its response to the latest proposal from the US. This official stated that negotiations are still in progress and that a conclusive decision has not been reached.
In terms of the potential outcomes, the reported agreement between Iran and the United States, if finalised, would implement a four-stage mechanism. The Iranian official further asserted that any agreement would not overlook Lebanon’s situation, emphasising the importance of continued discussions.
Prospects for Agreement Highlighted by Trump
President Trump has indicated that advancements in negotiations with Tehran could materialise imminently. During a press briefing at the White House on Wednesday, Trump stated that an agreement might be nearing finalisation but cautioned that certainty is not guaranteed.
<h4″They are close to signing papers,” Trump commented, noting that negotiations are progressing favourably. He mentioned that a significant breakthrough could potentially occur over the coming weekend.
<h4Furthermore, Trump discussed elements of the ongoing deal with Iran, stating that the United States is expected to secure Tehran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. This aspect remains one of the primary challenges within the negotiation framework. “We will get it,” he stated, reinforcing that the management of Iran’s enriched uranium reserves is crucial for any prospective agreement.
