Iran Security Chief Ali Larijani Declares No Negotiation with the United States

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the wake of heightened tensions across West Asia following the death of Ayatollah Khamenei due to Israeli-US strikes, Ali Larijani, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, stated on March 2 that Iran will not engage in negotiations with the United States. His comments were a direct response to a report by Al Jazeera, which cited the Wall Street Journal as indicating that Larijani may be open to dialogue with the US through Oman as an intermediary.

Larijani Criticizes US Leadership and Foreign Policy

During a press briefing, Larijani condemned US President Trump for exacerbating chaos in the region and suggested a potential increase in US military casualties due to his policies. He further criticized the perceived ‘Israel-first’ agenda of the American administration, asserting that Iran did not provoke the recent aggressive actions. In this context, he articulated a narrative about the sacrifices made by American soldiers, stating that the Iranian nation is currently in a defensive posture.

Provisional Leadership Council Meets Amidst Crisis

On the same day, Iranian state media reported that the Provisional Leadership Council of Iran convened its second meeting, featuring prominent figures including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, and Ayatollah Alireza Arafi. This meeting is a continuation of leadership discussions following the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei. The council is tasked with governing the country until a new supreme leader is appointed.

Context of the Current Situation

The need for this interim council arose after Khamenei and several high-ranking security officials were killed during ongoing strikes by US and Israeli forces as part of a military operation referred to as Operation Epic Fury or Roaring Lion. Following Khamenei’s death, President Trump addressed the Iranian populace, urging them to rise against their government, claiming it might be their only opportunity for change in many years.

Casualties and Damage Reported

According to reports from Iranian state media, the violence has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with at least 201 individuals confirmed dead across 24 provinces due to the attacks. This figure underscores the severe impact of the ongoing conflict between Iran and its adversaries, raising concerns about the stability of the region and the humanitarian implications for the Iranian people.
