Iran Confirms FIFA World Cup 2026 Participation Amid Conditions for Hosts

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Iran Football Federation (FFIRI) announced that the men’s national team will compete in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, scheduled to begin in June 2026. This announcement coincides with ongoing tensions in the Middle East, prompting Iran to urge co-hosts the United States, Mexico, and Canada to address specific concerns regarding their participation. This statement follows an incident where Canada denied entry to the head of the federation prior to the FIFA Congress, citing alleged affiliations with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which was labeled a “terrorist group” in 2024.

Commitment to Cultural Integrity

The Iranian federation reaffirmed its dedication to the event, stating, “We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account.” Furthermore, the statement emphasized that participation will occur without compromising Iran’s beliefs, culture, and convictions. Iran has qualified for the tournament, which will expand to include 48 teams and place the country in Group G, along with Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt. Their matches are scheduled to take place in Los Angeles and Seattle, as outlined in the current schedule.

Conditions for Participation

Mehdi Taj, the president of the Iran Football Federation, communicated on state television that the Iranian authorities have set forth ten conditions aimed at ensuring adequate treatment of the national team during the tournament. The demands include the timely issuance of visas, respect for the staff, the proper display of the national flag and anthem throughout the tournament, and stringent security measures at airports, hotels, and routes leading to stadiums hosting Iran’s matches. These conditions highlight the federation’s focus on safeguarding the interests of its national representatives amidst international challenges.

U.S. Stand on Iranian Delegation

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has confirmed that Iran’s football players would be welcomed at the tournament. However, he mentioned the possibility of restricting entry to certain members of the Iranian delegation who are believed to have connections with the IRGC. This situation could affect the delegation’s overall participation, despite the invitation extended to the athletes, demonstrating the complex dynamics of international relations impacting the event.

Largest Edition of the World Cup Scheduled

The forthcoming FIFA World Cup in 2026 is set to be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams and a total of 104 matches. The inaugural game is planned for Mexico City, while the final match will take place in New Jersey. These developments represent significant milestones in the evolution of the tournament, and the anticipated participation of Iran reflects both the global nature of the event and the intricate relationships that govern international sports.
