Iran Asserts Right to Nuclear Energy Amid Ongoing Negotiations With the US

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran has reaffirmed its commitment to what it describes as the legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Ambassador Mohammad Fathali, speaking in New Delhi, stated that negotiations with the United States currently do not include discussions on nuclear issues. He emphasized that Iran will not compromise on its rights as outlined by the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The ambassador pointed out that the matter of uranium enrichment has been addressed clearly by the Iranian government. Fathali reiterated that Iran’s stance is firm, asserting that the nation will uphold its rights to peaceful nuclear development. He conveyed that discussions regarding the nuclear issue would take place in the future within a structured framework.

Proposals for Peace Talks

In the ongoing dialogue with the US, Iran has made a proposal that reportedly includes ending the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, while allowing Tehran to retain operational control. Additionally, it calls for the immediate withdrawal of US military forces from the Persian Gulf and suggests that detailed conversations concerning the nuclear issue should follow at a later date.

This nuclear situation has been a central point of tension between Iran and the United States since the beginning of their negotiations. In light of this, President Donald Trump has asserted that Iran must agree never to pursue nuclear weapons. Furthermore, the US has demanded the transfer of approximately 400 kilograms of uranium, enriched to nearly 60 per cent, that is currently under Iranian control.

Ambassador Fathali dismissed claims by Trump regarding Iran’s supposed strategic and economic weaknesses due to sanctions, asserting that such perceptions fail to grasp the resilience of the Iranian nation. He cited instances from the 40-day war as evidence of Iran’s substantial defensive capabilities. While acknowledging that sanctions have adversely impacted Iran’s economy, he confirmed that Tehran has not shied away from the economic realities it faces.

Regional Stability and Diplomatic Efforts

With negotiations between the US and Iran seemingly stagnant, both nations have seen a rise in hostilities. Despite this, Ambassador Fathali expressed optimism that diplomacy could avert broader conflict in the region. He pointed out that the current upheaval could be attributed to policies based on threats and military action, which, according to him, have not fostered stability.

Fathali suggested that Iran’s persistent strength amid pressures from two nuclear powers stems from its internal capacities and principles. He noted that past experiences with ceasefires have made Iran cautious about negotiations, emphasizing the need for a realistic approach to future developments.

He further stated that any effective framework for regional peace should reflect the realities on the ground as well as the genuine interests of the regional nations. Agreements that are influenced by external pressures and short-term goals, according to him, will ultimately lack durability.

India’s Role in Global Peace

On the topic of India’s influence in global peace and security, Ambassador Fathali acknowledged New Delhi’s significant role as a major global power. He remarked that India’s standing as a member of the BRICS group allows it to bolster multilateralism, encourage dialogue, and contribute to mitigating international tensions.

Fathali asserted that enhanced stability and security in the Persian Gulf would be advantageous not only for Iran but also for its regional partners, including India. He remarked that both Iran and India possess distinct advantages that could pave the way for expanded cooperation and engagement between the two nations.
