International Big Cat Alliance Summit Deferred Amid Ebola Concerns In Africa

The CSR Journal Magazine

The First International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit, originally set for June 1 in New Delhi, has been postponed following the delay of the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV). This decision comes in light of the recent Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, which has raised public health concerns. The IBCA Summit was intended to coincide with IAFS IV, as numerous African nations play a significant role in initiatives aimed at the conservation and protection of big cats.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change confirmed the rescheduling decision after consultations with the Chairperson of the African Union and the African Union Commission. In a statement, the ministry noted that the postponement aimed to facilitate broader participation from all Range countries, including those from Africa. The new dates for the IBCA Summit will be announced after discussions with involved stakeholders.

Global Health Crisis Influencing Events

The decision to defer both summits aligns with the global response to the Ebola outbreak, particularly following the World Health Organisation’s categorisation of the crisis in Congo and Uganda as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The evolving health situation has prompted a re-evaluation of large gatherings in light of public safety, resulting in the postponement of the Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit initially slated for next week in New Delhi.

Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs engaged in detailed deliberations with the Chairperson of the African Union and the African Union Commission to assess the viability of hosting the high-profile diplomatic assembly under the current health circumstances. Recognising the severity of the outbreak, the involved parties agreed on the necessity for caution, ultimately leading to the decision to postpone the scheduled summits.

The collaborative discussions between the Government of India and the African Union also focused on ensuring ongoing cooperation in enhancing public health responsiveness across the continent. This support is particularly targeted towards the Africa CDC and relevant national institutions to improve health preparedness initiatives.

Commitment to Biodiversity and Health Initiatives

In light of the health crisis, India has reiterated its commitment to partnering with African nations in addressing shared challenges related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The country has expressed its preparedness to provide both material and strategic support to the Africa CDC, aiming to ensure coordinated, Africa-led responses to the ongoing public health situation.

India’s support aligns with the broader goal of strengthening healthcare infrastructure and response mechanisms within African nations. Officials have noted the importance of solidarity and collective action in the face of the current health emergency, emphasising the significance of mutual assistance between India and African countries.

This rescheduling highlights the interconnectedness of global health and environmental issues, underscoring the need for continuous dialogue and collaborative efforts among nations. As the situation develops, further announcements related to the IBCA Summit will follow, reflecting the commitment of all involved parties to uphold international cooperation in conservation and public health domains.
