Indian Coast Guard Intercepts 526 Kg Narcotics Worth Rs 3,000 Crore in Arabian Sea

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Coast Guard successfully intercepted approximately 526 kg of narcotics valued at over Rs 3,000 crore in the Arabian Sea, west of Lakshadweep. This operation was conducted on September 25 and was a coordinated effort involving the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Gujarat. Officials reported that the drugs were seized from an Iranian dhow following actionable intelligence that had been gathered prior to the operation.

According to Coast Guard officials, the confiscated drugs included heroin and methamphetamine. During the operation, five Pakistani nationals on board the vessel were apprehended. The operation was marked by thorough sea-air surveillance, allowing Coast Guard personnel to track and pursue the suspicious vessel effectively before boarding.

After the boarding, the dhow, its crew, and the seized narcotics were escorted to Mumbai under armed security for joint interrogation and subsequent legal proceedings. This significant operation reflects ongoing efforts by Indian maritime authorities to combat drug smuggling, particularly through sea routes.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies

The operation was integral to the collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat ATS, aimed at detecting and dismantling suspected transnational drug smuggling networks. This joint initiative underscores the importance of coordination between various security agencies in addressing maritime crime.

In addition to this recent seizure, the Coast Guard has conducted numerous similar operations in partnership with Gujarat ATS and other related agencies. In April 2025, for example, a significant interception resulted in the seizure of 307.5 kg of narcotics off the Gujarat coast, as logged in official records of interdiction cases.

Maritime routes in the Arabian Sea have become focal points for Indian law enforcement agencies, implementing a series of drug interdiction operations. The combined use of intelligence inputs, rigorous vessel surveillance, and collaboration between maritime and land enforcement units has proven effective in identifying suspected drug shipments.

Ongoing Efforts Against Drug Smuggling

The recent seizure and apprehension highlight the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to enhancing maritime surveillance and curbing illicit activities within India’s territorial waters. These operations form part of a broader strategy to combat the persistent threat of drug trafficking via maritime routes.

Indian maritime and law enforcement agencies continue to bolster their operational capabilities to prevent drug smuggling. The integration of advanced surveillance techniques and strategic collaborative frameworks is crucial to mitigating the risks associated with maritime drug trafficking.

Following the latest operation, the Coast Guard emphasised its ongoing commitment to protecting coastal security and ensuring that illegal drug trafficking is addressed efficiently. The seized narcotics and detained individuals are undergoing rigorous investigation, and legal actions will be pursued in accordance with established protocols.
