The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s 80th Independence Day was acknowledged worldwide on August 15, with celebrations spanning from the Pacific and East Asia to Europe, the Gulf, and the Americas. Diverse events included flag-hoisting ceremonies, the singing of the national anthem and ‘Vande Mataram’, alongside cultural programmes and gatherings organised by Indian missions and diaspora groups.

A significant feature of this year’s festivities was the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ initiative, which involved the sequential hoisting of the Tricolour at Indian missions as the day progressed across different time zones. The initiative commenced in Fiji and concluded in San Francisco, embodying the essence of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign aimed at fostering unity in celebration.

Leaders from various nations, including France, Russia, and Australia, extended their greetings, reaffirming diplomatic ties with India at this milestone in its history. In Wellington, over 500 individuals from the Indian diaspora participated in a ceremony led by High Commissioner Muanpuii Saiawi, which included the reading of the President’s address and singing patriotic songs.

Cultural Engagements in Major Cities

Cultural expressions were prevalent during the Independence Day observance throughout major cities. In Tokyo, school children and members of the Indian community engaged in performances honouring freedom fighters, while Japanese media highlighted the significant occasion. Similarly, in Beijing, Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami oversaw the Tricolour hoisting, with community members participating despite inclement weather.

Moscow’s celebrations began with floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi statue, culminating in the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ and cultural performances. Members of the Indian diaspora along with friends of India attended this event, which featured a bike rally organised by the community. In Berlin, festivities included a musical presentation that showcased Indian classical music and contemporary influences.

Rome’s celebrations featured a cultural programme and ‘Vande Mataram’ renditions, reflecting the international nature of the recognition. Numerous events took place in the Gulf, with Abu Dhabi’s embassy calling the occasion a celebration of pride and unity among the Indian community, while painting competitions highlighted the spirit of independence.

Messages from Global Leaders

Messages of goodwill from India’s international partners accompanied the celebrations. French President Emmanuel Macron offered his congratulations on India’s milestone, while Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the strong bilateral partnership and the collaborative efforts in various international platforms. He expressed optimism about enhancing security and stability through ongoing cooperation.

In the United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the perseverance of India and emphasised the strength of bilateral relations stemming from personal connections among leaders. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted India’s significant advancements since independence, recognising it as both the world’s largest democracy and a rapidly growing economy.

Other messages included greetings from leaders of neighbouring countries, affirming their commitment to fostering close ties with India. For instance, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu and Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah conveyed their best wishes, reflecting on historical connections and prospects for future collaboration.

The global observance of India’s 80th Independence Day illustrated a robust sense of community, cultural expression, and international camaraderie. The participation of the diaspora alongside the positive responses from allied nations highlighted the ongoing engagement between India and the world as it commemorated this historic occasion.
