India Approves First Semi High-Speed Rail Link Between Ahmedabad and Dholera at ₹20,667 Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has sanctioned the Ahmedabad-Dholera Semi High-Speed Double Line railway project, positioning it as the nation’s inaugural semi high-speed rail corridor established using domestically developed technology. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved this initiative, which comes with an estimated budget of Rs 20,667 crore. The project aims to enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad, the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), the new Dholera airport, and the Lothal National Maritime Heritage Complex.

The 134-kilometre double-line corridor will be realised under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. It has been noted that this railway line may serve as a prototype for subsequent semi high-speed rail developments throughout India, demonstrating the government’s commitment to advancing the nation’s infrastructure.

Expected Benefits and Travel Improvements

Trains operating on this route are anticipated to reach speeds of up to 200 kmph, although the line is designed to accommodate speeds of 220 kmph. This advancement is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between Ahmedabad and Dholera to less than one hour. Reports indicate that the passage from Sabarmati to Dholera could take approximately 48 minutes, while the journey from Sarkhej to Dholera may be completed in around 34 minutes.

This project not only aims to expedite passenger travel but also focuses on promoting freight movement along this corridor. With anticipated enhanced access to the Dholera Special Investment Region—labelled as a key industrial and manufacturing hub—the railway is expected to bolster economic activities in the region.

Government forecasts suggest that this railway initiative will improve connectivity for nearly 284 villages, which together have a population of about five lakh people. By integrating remote areas with major urban centres, the project is set to facilitate community development and economic growth.

Project Completion Timeline and Environmental Considerations

The completion of the rail corridor is targeted for the period between 2030 and 2031, according to official timelines. The long-term vision for this initiative includes not only improving travel efficiency but also promoting sustainable transport solutions. Officials have shared that the project could contribute to reducing carbon emissions by decreasing reliance on road transport.

By encouraging rail-based travel and logistics, the Ahmedabad-Dholera rail corridor is positioned to play a pivotal role in India’s broader goals of sustainable development. As rail transport is generally more environmentally friendly than road transport, this initiative may reinforce the government’s commitment to achieving an environmentally sustainable transportation framework.

The progress of the Ahmedabad-Dholera Semi High-Speed Railway project is being monitored closely, and updates will be provided as the construction phase advances. Stakeholders, including local communities and business entities, are keenly observing developments related to this transformative infrastructure project.
