IMD Predicts Rain and Thunderstorms in Himachal Pradesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a forecast of light rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms in various parts of Himachal Pradesh for the upcoming week. This prediction includes isolated events expected on specific dates, with a general trend of warmer conditions anticipated across the state.

A weather bulletin released by the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Shimla on April 23 indicates that the previous 24 hours saw dry weather, with no precipitation reported. Minimum temperatures showed negligible variations and were estimated to be 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal in certain areas, while maximum temperatures were above normal by 2 to 7 degrees Celsius across most regions. Kukumseri recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 5.1°C, while Una experienced the highest maximum temperature of 38.7°C.

The IMD forecasts light rain or snowfall in isolated locations on April 24, 26, and 27. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in several areas on April 25, 28, and 29, marking a shift from the predominantly dry conditions observed earlier in the month. Thunderstorms, potentially accompanied by lightning and gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, are predicted for isolated locations on April 24, 25, 28, and 29, particularly affecting mid-hill districts like Shimla on April 25.

Temperature Trends and Predictions

The IMD has reported that minimum temperatures are likely to rise gradually by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours, with no significant changes anticipated thereafter. The maximum temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable over the next four to five days. In its extended forecast, the IMD notes that weather patterns from April 24 to 30 will largely remain consistent, with the likelihood of light rain or snowfall in isolated areas, accompanied by light to moderate precipitation in some regions.

While the overall rainfall during this period is expected to be normal, areas such as Chamba and Lahaul-Spiti might experience below-normal rainfall. Conversely, regions in Kinnaur and Kullu could see precipitation levels exceeding normal. Maximum temperatures during this timeframe are forecasted to be normal to above normal, particularly in low hills and plains, where temperatures are projected to fall between 24°C and 36°C. Minimum temperatures are anticipated to remain above normal in many low and mid-hill areas.

Looking ahead to early May, from May 1 to May 7, the IMD has advised that rainfall is expected to be below normal across many sectors of the state. Light precipitation is predicted in high and mid-hill regions on certain days, with temperatures expected to stabilise. In early May, while it is anticipated to be largely normal in the high and mid-hills, temperatures in low hills and plains could trend towards above normal, indicating a gradual warming pattern throughout the state.

Long-Term Weather Outlook

The IMD’s outlook for mid-May suggests that above-normal temperatures are likely to persist in low hills and plains. Forecasts indicate that rainfall across the majority of the state will likely remain below normal, with exceptions in isolated areas like Kangra and Una, where near-normal conditions might be observed.

This extended weather outlook aims to prepare residents and local authorities for the anticipated temperature increases and precipitation patterns, ensuring that appropriate measures can be taken during the transitional period. The IMD continues to monitor weather developments closely and will provide updates as necessary.

In summary, residents of Himachal Pradesh should expect a mix of warmer days along with the possibility of isolated rain and thunderstorms throughout the week, followed by a potential trend towards drier conditions as May unfolds.
