IMD Issues Heatwave Warning for Northwest and Central India

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a heatwave warning affecting various regions in India, indicating that temperatures may rise to 45 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The alert stresses the likely persistence of severe, hot, and dry weather conditions for at least a week. According to IMD scientist Akhilesh Shrivastav, this warning encompasses states in Northwest and Central India, along with surrounding areas.

In detail, the IMD has specifically highlighted that heatwave conditions are anticipated in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, as well as in Rajasthan and the Vidarbha, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra. This warning signifies increased temperatures and a heightened risk of heat-related issues in these states.

Additionally, Shrivastav mentioned the severity of conditions in specific locations. An ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Western Rajasthan and Western Uttar Pradesh, indicating particularly high temperatures. Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha are also under an ‘orange alert’ due to the forecast of severe heatwave conditions.

Expectations for Delhi and Surrounding Areas

In the Delhi-NCR region, temperatures are already elevated, with recordings between 42 and 43 degrees Celsius over the previous day. Forecasts suggest that these temperatures may remain consistently high, ranging from 42 to 44 degrees Celsius throughout the upcoming week. An isolated heatwave condition is also anticipated, with the possibility of temperatures peaking at 45 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

Due to these extreme weather conditions, an ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Delhi, effective for the next two days. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious and take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the heat.

The persistent heat is anticipated to continue for at least a week, raising concerns about public health and safety as temperatures rise. The IMD is closely monitoring the situation to provide updated forecasts and warnings.

Rainfall Patterns in Other Regions

While Northwest India is expected to remain dry—which will contribute to rising temperatures—other parts of the country are forecasted to experience varied weather conditions. States like Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are predicted to receive rainfall within the next few days. The IMD has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall warning for Kerala, signalling severe weather that could impact local communities.

Karnataka may also experience light hailstorm activity, prompting vigilance among residents. Concurrently, Northeast India is expected to witness significant rainfall, with warnings indicating the potential for heavy conditions in various areas. This contrast highlights the diverse weather patterns affecting different parts of the country simultaneously.

The IMD continues to provide crucial updates on the evolving weather scenarios, ensuring that residents remain informed about both heatwave and rainfall conditions. Accurate forecasting plays a vital role in preparing communities for extreme weather events and minimising adverse effects.
