Humayun Kabir Asserts Qurbani Will Proceed Despite Bengal’s Ban on Cow Slaughter

The CSR Journal Magazine

Humayun Kabir, the chief of the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), has sparked fresh political controversy in West Bengal by asserting that cow slaughter and the ritual of qurbani during Bakrid will continue “at any cost.” His remarks follow the recent announcement from the state government, headed by Suvendu Adhikari, which imposed stringent measures against illegal cattle slaughter and demanded stricter enforcement of the existing animal slaughter laws.

Speaking to the media in Hooghly on Wednesday, Kabir expressed his belief that no regulations would hinder the practice of qurbani, stating, “The government can make a rule asking Muslims not to eat beef, but ritual sacrifice will continue. We won’t listen to any objections.” He emphasised the historical significance of the practice, claiming it has been a tradition for 1,400 years and will persist indefinitely.

Government’s Response to Illegal Cattle Slaughter

The controversy surrounding Kabir’s statements arrives shortly after the newly established Bengal government conducted a thorough review of law and order. During this meeting, which took place at Nabanna, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari directed law enforcement to intensify efforts against illegal cattle trades and slaughterhouses.

The government has mandated that officials enforce laws relating to illegal slaughter activities strictly. This includes heightened coordination in border districts to prevent the illicit movement of cattle. The police have been instructed to ensure that all licensed cattle trade complies with legal frameworks.

In the midst of this escalating situation, prominent cleric Toha Siddiqui of Furfura Sharif urged the community to follow the law and refrain from cow slaughter during the qurbani period. Siddiqui stated, “Everyone should obey the law against cow slaughter,” while also questioning why similar restrictions were not consistently applied across India, suggesting that cow slaughter continues in other regions without similar scrutiny.

Political Reactions and Community Responses

Various political figures have reacted sharply to Kabir’s declarations, reflecting the heightened political and communal sensitivities present in West Bengal. Congress leader Husain Dalwai has appealed for sensitivity towards Hindu sentiments, stating that if cow slaughter offends Hindus, it would be prudent not to sacrifice cows. “We live in this country together and respect each other’s religion,” he noted, suggesting that goats could serve as an alternative for sacrifice.

Kabir’s statements have incited considerable backlash, especially given his history of provocative remarks. Last year, while still a member of Trinamool Congress, he announced intentions to lay the “foundation stone of the Babri Masjid” in Murshidabad on December 6, coinciding with the anniversary of the Babri demolition in Ayodhya. This previous action drew widespread condemnation and accusations of communal polarisation, particularly from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The ongoing debate surrounding cow slaughter and qurbani remains a sensitive topic in West Bengal, with differing opinions reflecting the diverse views within the community. As tensions continue to rise, the state government faces considerable pressure to enforce its regulations amidst conflicting opinions and longstanding traditions.
