The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district demolished the houses of two alleged members of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) overnight. The demolished properties belonged to Adil Thokar of Guree in Bijbehara and Haroon Ganaie of Hassanpora.

Officials have identified both individuals as active operatives involved with LeT. Head Constable Aashiq Hussain Qureshi, aged 35, was shot dead in a targeted attack at Lal Chowk in Anantnag on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Reports suggest that a lone gunman opened fire on Hussain while he performed security duties related to the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage.

Hussain sustained serious injuries and succumbed shortly thereafter, which prompted local security forces to initiate extensive operations throughout the district. These efforts were focused on apprehending the assailant and ensuring public safety in the aftermath of the incident.

Following the attack, the area was cordoned off, and a comprehensive search operation commenced, with additional reinforcements deployed to aid in the pursuit of the shooter. Checkpoints were also established at various strategic locations across Anantnag to bolster security.
