Tensions flared in Amtala on Saturday as a massive contingent of police and central forces, accompanied by three bulldozers and fire tenders, cordoned off a key party office used by Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The administrative action follows allegations that the structure was built illegally without the necessary sanctioned plans. According to official sources, complaints regarding the unauthorized construction had been lodged with the district administration. Following this, the administration had issued a notice for a dual hearing on July 15, sparking intense administrative and political speculation.
High Drama and Strict Cordoning at Amtala Crossing
The scene grew increasingly tense as high-ranking officials, including the Block Development Officer (BDO) and the Block Land and Land Reforms Officer (BLLRO), arrived at the spot. Security forces quickly barricaded the entire perimeter around the party office, located near the busy Amtala Crossing on the Amtala-Baruipur road.
* Guard rails were used to block half of the thoroughfare, restricting traffic movement to two narrow lanes.
* The police presence swelled steadily throughout the day.
* The situation escalated significantly with the arrival of three bulldozers at the site.
A Key TMC Stronghold Under Scrutiny
The office in question holds immense strategic value for the ruling party, serving as the central hub for overseeing organizational work and rallies across the South 24 Parganas district. It is also the primary venue where Abhishek Banerjee routinely held organizational meetings with party workers. Commenting on the development, the local MLA confirmed that the structure was built on unauthorized land and defended the administrative crackdown.
“The entire building was constructed illegally. The administration is simply taking rightful action. Notices were served beforehand and are even displayed on-site. The District Magistrate, SDO, and BDO jointly resolved that this illegal structure cannot remain, and the current action is being executed based on that decision,” the legislator stated.
As the administrative machinery prepares for next steps, the heavy deployment of forces remains on high alert to prevent any law and order deterioration.
