Government Introduces New Aadhaar Mobile Application

The CSR Journal Magazine

The government has launched a new Aadhaar mobile application, significantly enhancing features from the previous mAadhaar app. This updated version focuses on user privacy, offering quicker verification processes and granting individuals greater control over their personal data. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has indicated that the older mAadhaar app will be phased out, and users are encouraged to transition to this newly developed application.

The new app, introduced in January 2026, aims to make identity verification more secure and efficient. It facilitates the use of QR codes, Face ID authentication, and consent-based data sharing, eliminating the need to carry physical Aadhaar copies or share sensitive information indiscriminately. Users can now determine exactly which details they wish to disclose during the verification process.

This launch aligns with the government’s initiative towards a privacy-first digital identity approach, built on the principles established by the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. Users are now prompted to migrate from the older platform to this more advanced version as it provides a modern, streamlined experience.

Transition from mAadhaar to the New App

The onboarding process for the new app is slightly more elaborate owing to additional security layers introduced by UIDAI. Users must download the application from the Play Store or App Store and follow the prompts, including language selection and mobile number verification via OTP. Face Authentication is also required during the setup phase, after which users can create a six-digit PIN and activate biometric unlocking for added security. After verifying their Aadhaar details again via OTP, their accounts can be activated for use.

This careful setup process aims to ensure maximum security for user data while fostering confidence in the application’s ability to protect sensitive information.

Key Features of the New Aadhaar App

The new Aadhaar app introduces several significant features, notably QR code-based verification, enabling users to share identity without revealing full Aadhaar details. This functionality is beneficial in various contexts, including hotel check-ins and hospital visits, and operates effectively in offline scenarios.

Moreover, the application now supports face authentication, enhancing the security of identity verification compared to previous OTP reliance. Users can selectively share information such as their name or age, instead of their complete Aadhaar data during verification processes, which markedly enhances privacy.

Additionally, the app allows one-click locking and unlocking of Aadhaar biometrics, providing greater control directly from users’ devices. An authentication history feature has been included to enable tracking of Aadhaar usage, which offers users insights into when and where their Aadhaar details have been used.

The app also accommodates multiple profiles, allowing management of different Aadhaar accounts on a single device. It includes functionality for mobile number and address updates directly through the application, thereby reducing reliance on physical Aadhaar centres.

Furthermore, UIDAI has made clear its commitment to privacy by minimizing long-term storage of Aadhaar data by third parties. Enhanced features, including masked verification options, are set to assist users in sharing their details securely. UIDAI has extended the free online Aadhaar document update service until June 14, 2027, ensuring continued support for users in maintaining their information. This new app represents a significant move towards a more secure and user-oriented Aadhaar experience.
