Former TMC MLA Ramendu Singharay Arrested From Karnataka, Gets Egg Therapy in Hooghly

The CSR Journal Magazine

Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Ramendu Singharay has been brought to the Dhaniakhali Police Station in Hooghly district, West Bengal, following his detention in Karnataka. This action is linked to allegations regarding the illegal transportation of government relief materials and violations of the Arms Act. Singharay, representing the Tarakeswar Assembly constituency, was taken into custody on Sunday after a transit remand was secured.

The incident has also prompted public reactions, as evidenced by the gathering of protesters outside the police station upon Singharay’s arrival, leading to tensions that included instances of egg-throwing at the former MLA.

Incident Leading to the Allegations

According to reports from Hooghly Rural Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh, the case dates back to June 11. Allegedly, on that evening at approximately 7 pm, Singharay and his associates were observed transporting government relief materials on a motor van from the Vivekananda Teachers Training College in Kotalpur, which falls under the jurisdiction of Dhaniakhali Police Station. This activity reportedly occurred during a period of load shedding, raising suspicions among local residents.

During the transport, local supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intervened, contesting the legitimacy of Singharay’s actions. In the ensuing confrontation, it was claimed that Singharay brandished a small firearm to intimidate the BJP supporters and subsequently managed to escape the scene. Police sources have confirmed that they later conducted searches at the college premises.

Law enforcement officials indicated that numerous relief materials, including tarpaulins, dustbins, and blankets, were unearthed from two store rooms at the educational institution as a result of these searches. This recovery formed the basis for further legal action against Singharay and his associates.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Following the June 11 incident, a case was formally registered at the Dhaniakhali Police Station on June 12, 2026, under several pertinent sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Specifically, this includes charges captured in Case No. 188/26, which encompasses accusations under sections 316(5), 303(2), 352, 61(2), and 3(5) of the BNS, as well as sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act against Singharay and others involved.

Law enforcement reported that a dedicated team from the Hooghly district was able to track down and apprehend Singharay and one of his associates in Belgaum, Karnataka, on the morning of June 22. Following their capture, authorities secured a transit remand from a local court in Karnataka, enabling their transport back to the Dhaniakhali Police Station later that same day.

As the situation develops, police officials have stated that investigations are ongoing to unravel the complete circumstances surrounding this case.
