Amanpreet Singh Gill, a former pacer for the India Under-19 cricket team and a notable player for Punjab, has died at the age of 36 in Chandigarh. His passing occurred on Wednesday, but the exact cause has not yet been disclosed. Gill had represented Punjab in domestic cricket during his active years and was a part of India’s youth cricket framework.

Virat Kohli, who shared the dressing room with Gill during their Under-19 days, conveyed his grief in a message on X. He expressed that he was “shocked and saddened” by the news and extended prayers and strength to Gill’s family and loved ones. Kohli’s post also included a message of peace for the departed cricketer.

During his domestic cricket career, Gill participated in six first-class matches from 2006 to 2008, where he took a total of 11 wickets. As a right-arm medium pacer, he showed potential and was considered a promising talent within Punjab’s cricket community. Notably, Gill was involved in India’s youth tours to England, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka in 2007, playing in several youth one-day internationals as well as a three-day youth “Test.” He was, however, not selected for the Under-19 squad that went on to win the World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 under Kohli’s captaincy.

In addition to his domestic achievements, Gill was part of the Indian Premier League, having played for Punjab Kings, which was formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, in the tournament’s inaugural season in 2008. Later in his career, he remained connected to Punjab cricket and served on the senior selection committee.

On the evening following Gill’s passing, players from Punjab Kings wore black armbands in their Indian Premier League match against Sunrisers Hyderabad as a tribute to the late cricketer. Yuvraj Singh, a former India all-rounder and a teammate of Gill’s in their early careers, also shared his sorrow on X. He reflected on Gill as a dedicated and humble cricketer who had a deep love for the sport, offering his heartfelt condolences to Gill’s family.

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) released an official statement mourning the loss of Gill, highlighting his contributions as a cricketer and his role on the selection committee. The PCA expressed its condolences to Gill’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Gill’s cremation is scheduled for Thursday at 4 PM at the Manimajra Cremation Ground in Chandigarh, allowing friends, family, and the cricketing community to pay their final respects to the former player.
