Five Delhi Government School Girls Selected For Prestigious US Space Science Workshop

The CSR Journal Magazine

Five students from Delhi government schools have been chosen to take part in a Space Science workshop at the US Space and Rocket Center, following a competitive selection process involving over 400 applicants from various institutions across the city. The students received their tickets to the United States from the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, who emphasised the importance of initiatives aimed at encouraging girls in the sciences.

The workshop is part of a larger programme designed to identify and nurture high-potential students from government and government-aided schools, particularly those who demonstrate a keen interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and space exploration. Gupta referred to this opportunity as crucial for promoting scientific curiosity and empowering young girls in India.

A rigorous two-stage selection process was implemented to identify the top five participants. Initially, 130 students were shortlisted based on a preliminary assessment of their STEM knowledge and a review of their Statements of Purpose. This assessment looked at their scientific curiosity and analytical thinking skills.

Details of the Workshop

Following the preliminary stage, the shortlisted students participated in a regional workshop aimed at developing practical science projects. Their work was carefully evaluated, leading to the selection of the best five project ideas. Those students will attend the week-long workshop in the US, scheduled for October-November 2026, although specific dates are yet to be confirmed.

During the workshop, the selected girls will engage in a variety of learning sessions and activities surrounding space science. This experience is expected to enhance their understanding of STEM subjects while providing them with valuable international exposure in space education.

The programme is part of the Saksham initiative launched by the Delhi government in collaboration with Honeywell Technologies. This initiative aims to reach 12,000 students by 2029 and covers 12 girls’ schools across the country, with a major focus on Delhi, along with centres in Pune, Bengaluru, and Gurugram.

Empowerment Through Education

The initiative aims to foster a stronger representation of women in the field of space science, where Indian females currently remain underrepresented. By facilitating such workshops, there is a hope of raising awareness and inspiring young girls to pursue careers in scientific fields that are often seen as predominantly male.

During the launch of this programme, CM Rekha Gupta articulated her confidence in the potential of Indian girls, suggesting they can break new ground in the science sector. Her remarks underscore the importance of targeted educational programmes in broadening opportunities for women in STEM-related disciplines.

With increasing efforts to support female students in science and technology, the Saksham initiative stands as a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive academic environment for future generations. The collaboration between the Delhi government and Honeywell Technologies is expected to leave a lasting impact on participating students as they embark on their educational journeys.
