Families in Balochistan and Karachi Allege Enforced Disappearances by Security Forces

The CSR Journal Magazine

New allegations regarding enforced disappearances have emerged from Balochistan, where families of three young men assert that they were taken by Pakistani security agencies during separate late-night operations. The incidents, reported by The Balochistan Post, highlight ongoing concerns surrounding human rights and safety in the region.

The family of 18-year-old Umar Baloch claims he was detained in a raid on his residence in Dasht, located within the Kech district, during the early hours of 9 May. They contend that personnel from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), along with agents from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), were involved in his abduction. Following the raid, the family reports that they have received no information regarding his current whereabouts.

In a separate incident, Dr Zaheer, a 27-year-old dental surgeon from Hoshab in the Kech district, was reportedly apprehended in Quetta. Relatives indicate that he was seized by armed individuals claiming to be CTD officials around 2 am on 11 May, in the Isa Nagri area on Brewery Road. His family asserts that he has been unreachable ever since his detention.

Incidents in Karachi

The situation extends to Karachi, where the family of 25-year-old Tahir, a mobile phone technician, alleges that he was taken by CTD officials during a raid at their home in the Rexer Line area on 23 April. According to relatives, the raid occurred in the pre-dawn hours, and they believe he has been relocated to an undisclosed location. They have not had any communication with him since his disappearance.

All families involved have made appeals to the authorities, requesting assistance in locating their missing relatives and ensuring their safe return. The urgency of their pleas reflects a deep concern for the well-being of their loved ones amid reports of widespread enforced disappearances in the region, as highlighted by The Balochistan Post.

These recent developments have reignited discussions about the human rights situation in both Balochistan and Karachi. Families continue to seek clarity regarding the fate of their missing relatives as incidents of enforced disappearances remain a contentious issue in Pakistan.

Return of Previously Missing Individuals

In a related note, two individuals previously reported missing in Karachi have returned to their families after months of alleged detention. According to family sources, Dawood Baloch and Ayesha Baloch, both residing in the Kalri area, were released earlier this month. Ayesha is said to have returned home on 9 May, while Dawood arrived a day later.

The accounts of their return provide a glimmer of hope for families experiencing similar anguish over missing loved ones. However, the circumstances surrounding their detention and release remain unclear, raising questions about the methods employed by security agencies in dealing with reported cases of enforced disappearance.

The situation underscores the need for more transparent mechanisms in addressing enforced disappearances, as the families of the recently abducted individuals and those returned continue to grapple with unresolved issues. Rights groups are likely to monitor developments closely in light of the ongoing human rights concerns in the regions mentioned.
