Explosions Rock Damascus During Macron’s Meeting with Syrian President

The CSR Journal Magazine

Explosions struck Damascus on Tuesday, coinciding with a significant meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron and Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa. The blasts reportedly injured at least four individuals and occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel, where it was alleged that Macron was staying. As the explosions transpired, Macron was inside the presidential palace, meeting with al-Sharaa.

Syrian state media reported the explosions originated from two explosive devices, one concealed in a dustbin and another located in a parked vehicle. Following the detonations, a large cloud of smoke was seen in the vicinity, which lies near the Ministry of Tourism and the National Museum of Damascus. Footage circulating on social media depicted flames engulfing a van and motorcycle, alongside bloodstains on the street.

The situation remains under investigation, and while the Syrian government claimed four were injured—including police officers—no fatalities have been confirmed at this time. No group has thus far taken responsibility for the attacks.

Macron’s Historic Visit to Syria

This visit marks a significant moment, as Macron is the first prominent Western leader to visit Syria since al-Sharaa assumed power. Arriving in the country on Monday night with an economic delegation, Macron is aiming to engage in discussions focused on Syria’s post-war reconstruction and international collaboration. His trip is timely, occurring just ahead of his attendance at a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

Macron has been an advocate for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria by Europe and the United States, arguing for a more constructive approach towards the nation as it seeks to rebuild after years of conflict. During his visit, the French President is scheduled to sign several memorandums of understanding with al-Sharaa, aimed at attracting foreign investment for reconstruction efforts.

Prior to his meeting with the Syrian President, Macron engaged with local members of Syrian civil society, highlighting a broader intent to address Syria’s socio-economic challenges. However, details of these discussions have not been disclosed by his office.

Context of Ongoing Violence in Syria

The explosions come shortly after an earlier incident that involved an explosive device at a café near the Justice Palace in Damascus, resulting in at least ten casualties and over twenty injuries. These recent attacks are a setback for al-Sharaa, who has increasingly sought to consolidate power, following his leadership of an insurgency that overthrew Bashar Assad in 2024.

In the aftermath of the civil war, which resulted in nearly half a million deaths and displaced millions, al-Sharaa’s government has promised reforms aimed at stabilising the country. These pledges are particularly critical as Syria is in dire need of economic restructuring, with estimates suggesting the need for hundreds of billions of dollars to rehabilitate its war-torn infrastructure.

While Damascus has remained relatively calm in recent months, the persistent violence from various factions presents ongoing challenges for the new leadership. Al-Sharaa hopes to reassure diverse communities wary of his leadership style and restore trust from sceptical Western nations that were previously dubious about his association with former jihadist groups.
