Exit Polls Suggest BJP May Achieve Clear Majority in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Exit polls conducted following the conclusion of voting on April 29, 2026, have indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is projected to secure a majority in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Various polling agencies, including Chanakya Strategies, have estimated that the BJP may secure between 150 and 160 seats out of the 294 available in the Assembly.

Chanakya’s projections place the Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a competitive position with an estimated 130 to 140 seats. Other political parties are forecasted to collectively win between six and ten seats. Similarly, Matrize has estimated a BJP win in the range of 146 to 161 seats, with the TMC expected to gain between 125 to 140 seats.

In contrast, another exit poll by Poll Diary has suggested that the BJP could achieve between 142 and 171 seats, while forecasting a range of 99 to 127 seats for the TMC. The remaining smaller parties are projected to capture five to nine seats as per Poll Diary’s findings.

High Voter Turnout Recorded

The exit poll projections follow a notable voter turnout of approximately 90 per cent recorded before the polling ended at 6 PM. This impressive participation signals a strong engagement from the electorate in what is considered a pivotal election.

The Purba Bardhaman district reported the highest turnout at 92.46 per cent, followed closely by Hooghly at 90.34 per cent and Nadia at 90.28 per cent. Districts such as Howrah and North 24 Paraganas also witnessed high levels of participation at 89.44 per cent and 89.57 per cent, respectively. South 24 Paraganas saw a turnout of 89.74 per cent, contributing to a robust overall electoral engagement.

This high level of voter participation sets the stage for the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Analysts suggest that the results will provide insight into the political landscape of West Bengal as the incumbent TMC seeks to secure a fourth consecutive term against the BJP, which is aiming for a historic win.

Political Climate and Notable Incidents

The electoral contest in West Bengal has generated significant interest, particularly with the dynamic between the BJP and the TMC. Key political figures, including Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition Suvendhu Adhikari, and other notable candidates cast their votes in the second phase of polling.

Despite the high voter engagement, the elections were reportedly marred by instances of alleged violence, with rival parties accusing each other of intimidation and misconduct. These allegations have raised concerns about the electoral process and highlighted the competitive nature of the contest.

As the results approach, the political atmosphere remains high-stakes, with both parties keenly awaiting the outcomes that will define their positions in West Bengal’s governance for the foreseeable future. The performance of smaller parties may also play a crucial role in the final tally.
