Envoy Rejects Pakistan Comparison, Stresses India’s Independent Foreign Policy

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, categorically dismissed any parallels drawn between India and Pakistan regarding their potential roles in mediating the conflicts in West Asia. He asserted that it is the prerogative of each nation to determine whether engaging in mediation aligns with its national interests. Doraiswami made these comments during the World Peace Forum in Beijing, which was organised by Tsinghua University.

While acknowledging the complexity of global conflicts, he highlighted India’s willingness to participate in broader discussions about peace and security. However, he clarified that he does not consider mediation at this juncture beneficial for India. His remarks indicated a careful approach, prioritising India’s national interests over external expectations.

Remarks on Comparative Economic Conditions

During a question-and-answer session with a Chinese journalist, Doraiswami responded to inquiries regarding India’s global leadership in contrast to Pakistan’s mediation attempts in the Iran-US conflict. He described comparisons with Pakistan as “a little unfair,” asserting that the economic performance of the two countries speaks volumes about their respective capabilities on the international stage. This statement underscores the notion that a nation’s economic standing is crucial when evaluating its role in global affairs.

He emphasized that each country should be assessed based on its actual contributions and standing within the global framework. Doraiswami argued that India’s integration into the international community is unparalleled by most nations and cites ongoing economic collaborations with both European and Asian countries as evidence of this integration.

Further emphasising India’s readiness to engage in discussions on peace and security, he reiterated that mediation decisions should be made based on their potential to enhance national interests. His perspective showcases India’s strategic positioning in global matters.

India and China’s Similarities in Conflict Responses

Doraiswami drew comparisons between India and China regarding their responses to conflicts in Iran and Ukraine. He noted that both nations have navigated recent crises in West Asia and Eastern Europe with relatively aligned positions. This comment aims to illustrate how countries may share similar approaches in handling geopolitical challenges while maintaining their unique national interests.

In his discourse at the forum, he participated in discussions surrounding protectionism and global governance, further highlighting India’s engagement in significant international dialogues. Despite the crowded landscape of mediators in several conflicts, India’s position remains open to contributing meaningfully to peace and security when deemed beneficial.

Doraiswami’s remarks encapsulate India’s nuanced stance on international mediation, signifying a cautious yet willing approach to engage as a global player while retaining a focus on its national priorities.
