Elon Musk Announces Major Starship Super Heavy Launch on May 20

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX will conduct its largest Starship Super Heavy launch on May 20. This mission marks the 12th flight test of the Starship vehicle, which is recognised as the most powerful rocket ever constructed. The upcoming launch is set to feature considerable modifications across nearly all components of the rocket.

Starship comprises a two-part system, with the lower section known as Super Heavy acting as a booster. This substantial engine cluster is designed to propel the rocket skyward. The upper stage, referred to as Starship, functions as the spacecraft responsible for reaching space and transporting crew and cargo.

Notably, the combined height of the Starship system exceeds that of the Statue of Liberty, underscoring its scale and capability. For this upcoming flight test, both the Super Heavy booster and the upper Starship stage have undergone comprehensive redesigns to enhance performance.

Significance of the Launch

For its 12th flight, the rocket will utilise an upgraded version of SpaceX’s Raptor engine, which operates on liquid methane and liquid oxygen. Additionally, the launch pad at Starbase, SpaceX’s facility located in Texas, has been refurbished specifically for this event.

The launch is scheduled for 5:30 PM Central Time on May 19 (5 AM IST on May 20). Following liftoff, the Super Heavy booster is expected to separate approximately two and a half minutes into the flight. It will then execute a boostback burn to slow its descent and aim for a controlled landing in the Gulf of Mexico.

Importantly, SpaceX will not attempt to catch the booster with the mechanical arms of its launch tower during this initial outing for the newly configured vehicle. Meanwhile, the Starship upper stage will continue its trajectory into space.

Flight Objectives and Experiments

As the Starship ascends, it will deploy 22 Starlink simulators, which are dummy versions of SpaceX’s internet satellites. The mission will also involve relighting one Raptor engine in space. A significant aspect of this test involves an intentional removal of a single heat shield tile from Starship’s underside, allowing for measurements concerning the aerodynamic load on surrounding tiles during re-entry.

The final two Starlink simulators will activate their cameras to gather imagery of the Starship’s heat shield, relaying data back to engineers on Earth. This feature represents an innovative approach by SpaceX to remotely monitor the readiness of the heat shield for future re-entry operations.

To enhance imaging, several tiles on the Starship have been painted white, assisting the satellites in locking onto these targets during their observation. The flight will additionally assess a banking manoeuvre intended to replicate the return path for Starships during future missions.
