EAM Jaishankar Calls for Enhanced Focus on Supply Chain Resilience at Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meet

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasised the importance of fostering partnerships to improve supply chain resilience during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in New Delhi on May 26. He highlighted the challenges related to connectivity chokepoints, manufacturing capabilities, resource distribution, and the deficiencies in critical infrastructure. Jaishankar’s opening remarks set a collaborative tone as he noted that this assembly marks the third meeting of the Quad members in a span of 18 months.

He pointed out that addressing these global issues is essential for mutual growth. Jaishankar underscored that each of these areas offers significant opportunities for enhanced cooperation and progress. He expressed the belief that closer ties could lead to stronger economic growth and the achievement of technological potential.

Focus on Strategic Confidence and Maritime Security

During the meeting, Jaishankar called for an increase in strategic confidence among the Quad nations. He advocated for the need to ensure maritime security and promote a wider range of economic options for regional countries. He stressed the importance of building trusted and transparent partnerships to tackle concerns in the Indo-Pacific region. The minister also pointed to how deepening collaboration in these domains could bolster regional stability and security.

Reflecting on the progress made in recent months, Jaishankar noted collaborative efforts across essential priorities such as maritime security, critical technologies, and economic resilience. He highlighted advancements in Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) as one of the successful initiatives undertaken by the Quadrilateral partners. Jaishankar emphasised that as maritime democracies and market economies, the Quad nations share a joint responsibility to uphold the principles of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

He asserted that it is crucial for the region to continue serving as a catalyst for global growth and stability. The minister’s comments align with the broader objectives of the Quad, which aims to enhance security and ensure a collective response to regional challenges.

Participants and Agenda of the Meeting

The Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was attended by significant representatives, including Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at the invitation of Jaishankar. The meeting is designed to build upon the framework established during their previous gathering in Washington, D.C., on July 1, 2025. The agenda for the day was extensive, covering several critical topics.

Discussions focused on reaffirming the commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, with an emphasis on maintaining maritime security and freedom of navigation within a rules-based international order. The participants were expected to evaluate progress made in areas concerning critical technology, climate resilience, and infrastructure projects.

Furthermore, they planned to exchange insights on emerging security challenges facing the region and broader international developments. The meeting represents a continuation of the commitment by the Quad nations to work together in addressing shared concerns, aligning their strategic interests, and responding to global issues collaboratively.
