DRDO Demonstrates Multi-Layer Missile Shield And New Anti-Ship Missile Capability

The CSR Journal Magazine

India marked a major milestone in its strategic defence capabilities on Friday as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully demonstrated a series of key missile technologies, including a multi-layered Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system and a new medium-range Naval Anti-Ship Missile capability.

Announcing the achievement, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said three consecutive flight tests had validated India’s ability to defend against a range of threats and strengthened the country’s indigenous defence architecture.

“DRDO has successfully demonstrated multiple crucial technologies bolstering the nation’s defence capabilities against different types of enemy threats,” Singh said in a post on X.

According to the minister, the demonstrations have placed India among a select group of countries possessing advanced ballistic missile defence capabilities capable of engaging threats ranging from long-range ballistic missiles to intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).

Multi-Layered Missile Shield Successfully Validated

The tests showcased India’s ability to detect, track and destroy incoming ballistic missiles through a layered interception system designed to engage targets at different altitudes and ranges.

The architecture offers multiple opportunities to neutralise hostile missiles before they can reach strategic assets, military infrastructure or civilian population centres.

Rajnath Singh said the interceptor systems successfully engaged and destroyed their designated targets, validating advanced technologies developed to address emerging missile threats.

The demonstrations also highlighted the maturity of indigenous technologies developed by DRDO, including interceptor missiles, sensors, tracking radars and command-and-control systems functioning as an integrated network.

The capability assumes greater significance as modern conflicts increasingly involve long-range missiles capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads.

New Naval Anti-Ship Missile Enhances Maritime Deterrence

Alongside the ballistic missile defence tests, DRDO conducted the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile-Medium Range (NASM-MR), designed to strengthen the Indian Navy’s ability to strike hostile warships from stand-off distances.

The new capability is expected to enhance maritime deterrence and bolster India’s operational posture in the strategically important Indian Ocean Region.

The successful trials align with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, which seeks to reduce dependence on imported defence technologies and promote indigenous manufacturing.

The achievements are expected to contribute to the long-term modernisation of India’s armed forces and improve self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Mission Sudarshan Chakra Takes Shape

Separately, Rajnath Singh elaborated on “Mission Sudarshan Chakra”, unveiled by PM Modi during his Independence Day address in 2025.

Speaking at the inauguration of an Advanced Weapon System Complex at DRDO’s Defence Research and Development Laboratory in Hyderabad, the defence minister said the initiative aims to create a comprehensive multi-level missile defence shield for the country.

According to Singh, the proposed three-layered architecture will protect military bases, strategic infrastructure and civilian assets while retaining the capability to deliver a decisive response when required.

He said the system is being designed to ensure maximum protection with minimal disruption to citizens and emphasised the importance of resilience and deterrence in an evolving security environment.

The defence minister also urged DRDO to accelerate the transition from research and development to production and deployment.

With the successful demonstrations of missile interception and naval strike capabilities, India has moved closer to operationalising advanced indigenous defence systems, with the next phase expected to focus on production scaling and integration into the armed forces’ operational network.
