Donald Trump No Longer Sees Anthropic as a National Security Threat

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump stated that while he may have perceived the artificial intelligence company Anthropic as a potential threat to national security last week, his stance has shifted. This revelation came during an interview with “The Axios Show,” which was published on Friday. Trump’s remarks follow significant discussions regarding foreign access to Anthropic’s advanced AI models.

In recent developments, senior technical personnel from Anthropic were scheduled to engage with officials from the Trump administration to address the ongoing issue of foreign access to their advanced AI systems, known as Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The company took measures last week to disable access to these models for all users upon Trump’s directive to prevent foreign nationals from reaching them.

Details from Trump’s Interview

During the interview, when asked whether he believed Anthropic or its CEO Dario Amodei posed a threat to national security, Trump remarked, “Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe.” His comments reflect a notable turnaround in his views towards the company. Trump also acknowledged that Amodei had promptly and responsibly responded to the government’s export control directives.

In addition to discussing Anthropic, Trump participated in discussions with other G7 leaders and technology executives, including Amodei, during a recent summit held in France. This gathering focused on issues related to technology and security, highlighting the importance of collaboration between governments and tech leaders in navigating these challenges.

Despite his more relaxed stance on Anthropic, Trump did not entirely dismiss the possibility of employing emergency powers under the Defence Production Act against the company. He stated, “I have the power to use a lot of things, but I’m not sure I have to do that,” indicating that while he has the authority for further action, he may not be inclined to pursue it at this time.

Anthropic’s Response to Administration Interaction

Following Trump’s interview, an Anthropic spokesperson expressed gratitude towards the administration for its collaborative efforts in resolving the matter. The spokesperson noted, “We are grateful to the administration for their ongoing partnership in working to get this matter resolved as quickly as possible.” This indicates the company’s commitment to addressing concerns while ensuring its role in leading advancements in AI within the United States.

The spokesperson reiterated Anthropic’s dedication to collaborating with government agencies to achieve shared objectives, including protecting critical infrastructure. As developments unfold, the AI community is keenly observing the government’s approach to regulating and managing the implications of advanced technologies.

As the dialogue continues between Anthropic and the Trump administration, the implications of their interactions will likely have lasting impacts on both national security policies and the AI sector. The outcomes may shape how technology companies navigate regulatory frameworks while fostering innovation and ensuring safety in critical areas.
