Dharmendra Pradhan’s recent resignation as Education Minister has intensified political tensions in Punjab, where opposition parties are demanding the resignation of local ministers. Specifically, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains and Health Minister Balbir Singh are being pressured in light of alleged examination paper leaks and irregularities in the state. The political landscape has become more charged as the BJP, Congress, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) argue that Pradhan’s exit underlines the need for accountability in Punjab’s educational system.

These political groups assert that the situation highlights the frequency of recruitment and board examination leaks in Punjab in recent years. They argue that if accountability is being sought at the national level, similar standards should apply at the state level as well. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), currently in power in Punjab, has stated that any instances of examination irregularities have been thoroughly investigated and that action has been taken where wrongdoing was identified.

Opposition’s Demands and Allegations

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress chief, welcomed Pradhan’s decision, deeming it a success for student-led protests against examination irregularities. Warring called for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Education Minister Bains to also be held accountable, alleging that numerous examination papers, including those for Class 12 English, were compromised during AAP’s administration. He asserted that student protesters had previously encountered police action and questioned the government’s commitment to accountability in these matters.

Additionally, Warring referred to earlier comments made by senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia, suggesting that resignations should follow examination leaks. He proposed that this principle should now extend to Punjab’s ministers as well. This escalation in demands is coupled with mounting pressure from the opposition, seeking to influence public sentiment ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls.

The BJP has intensified its critique of the Punjab government, with Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa questioning why AAP leaders, who previously supported protests regarding the NEET paper leakage, have not similarly addressed the allegations of paper leaks within Punjab. He called for stringent measures against those accountable for these alleged irregularities and insisted on the resignation of Bains.

AAP’s Response to the Controversy

The SAD echoed the calls for resignations, with MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal condemning the Punjab government for allegedly undermining the integrity of the examination system. She cited ongoing examination scandals during AAP’s rule and reiterated demands for the resignations of both Bains and Singh. These developments have further complicated the regional political discourse as the opposition attempts to establish a direct correlation between the Centre’s handling of the NEET issue and the local administration’s responses to similar allegations.

In response to the growing demands for accountability, AAP leaders have argued that it is misleading to equate every irregularity with the need for ministerial resignations. They assert that the government has taken action against officials involved in wrongdoing and emphasise the importance of strengthening recruitment processes and enhancing examination security as primary objectives.

As Punjab prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections, the issue of examination paper leaks is poised to remain a significant point of contention. The ongoing political discourse underscores the challenges that the AAP government faces amid intensified scrutiny from opposition parties as they prepare their campaigning strategies.
