Delhi to Establish EV Charging Hubs in Parking Areas and Markets

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will soon set up electric vehicle (EV) charging hubs with multiple charging points and battery-swapping facilities at parking lots near key markets, commercial complexes, and Metro stations throughout the capital. This plan was announced by MCD officials on Monday, signalling a significant step towards enhancing Delhi’s EV infrastructure.

Currently, the civic body is in the process of identifying suitable locations for these hubs and has solicited proposals from public sector undertakings (PSUs) engaged in the development of EV charging infrastructure. Unlike typical standalone charging stations, these proposed hubs are expected to accommodate over 25 charging points and cater to various types of vehicles, including electric cars and two-wheelers.

Proposals and Planned Features of Charging Hubs

As part of this initiative, two public sector companies have already expressed interest, with one proposing a hub featuring approximately 30 charging stations and another suggesting a facility with 27 charging points. Both of these proposals are currently under review by the MCD. In a letter dated June 19, the MCD reached out to around 10 PSUs that focus on EV charging infrastructure, requesting proposals for the development of fully integrated charging hubs across its municipal parking areas.

Officials state that the vision for these dedicated EV charging hubs is to situate them where vehicle owners typically park – near high-traffic locations such as commercial areas and Metro stations. A senior MCD official noted that these high-footfall sites are ideal for fostering a more extensive charging ecosystem.

Priority for this project is being given to MCD-owned parking lots, although other government-owned land parcels may also be considered depending on their feasibility and the required approvals. In addition to standard charging facilities, battery-swapping stations are likely to be incorporated, especially for electric two-wheelers, which represent a significant segment of the EV market in Delhi.

Operational Considerations and Security Measures

Officials have indicated that the charging hubs will feature both fast and slow charging options. Fast chargers are anticipated to be installed in busy public settings, while slow chargers will cater to users who may leave their vehicles parked for extended periods. As these hubs require substantial investment due to the expensive equipment involved, the MCD is exploring security measures such as fencing and the deployment of security personnel to protect the facilities from theft and vandalism.

A senior official commented, “These hubs are not isolated charging points. Maintaining security is essential given the size of the investment and the valuable equipment.” This suggests that operators will need to arrange for additional safety measures to ensure the integrity of the infrastructure.

The MCD is currently evaluating site feasibility, electricity requirements, and operational logistics before finalising the selected locations for the hubs. Official statistics indicate that there are currently 470 operational EV charging and battery-swapping stations in Delhi, and the introduction of these new hubs is anticipated to enhance the city’s growing public charging network in alignment with the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.
