The Delhi High Court has granted interim bail to Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, until June 2, 2026. This decision allows him to attend his father’s funeral after his father reportedly passed away on the night of May 14-15, 2026. Rashid is currently imprisoned in a terror-funding case, and the court’s order was delivered by Justices Prathiba Singh and Madhu Jain.

As a condition of the interim bail, Rashid must be accompanied by at least two police officials in plainclothes throughout the duration of his outing. The officials will accompany him from Tihar Jail to Srinagar and remain with him during his time there. The court specified that he would only be allowed to visit the burial site or any designated place of worship, restricting his movement outside these areas.

Rashid requested the interim bail based on the death of his father, who had been undergoing medical treatment at AIIMS. He cited the need to conduct the burial and carry out traditional rites as essential reasons for his request. In October 2019, he was named in a charge sheet, and subsequently, a special NIA court framed formal charges against him in March 2022. The charges include criminal conspiracy under section 120B, waging war against the government under section 121, and sedition under section 124A of the Indian Penal Code. These allegations are further compounded by provisions from the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, indicating the severity of the accusations against him.

The ongoing legal process serves as a critical juncture for Rashid, whose political career and public standing have been deeply affected by these allegations.
