Delhi High Court Grants Bail to Anwar Khan in Murder of Gym Trainer Nadir Shah Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi High Court has awarded bail to Anwar Khan, known as Chacha, who is implicated in the murder of gym trainer Nadir Shah. The court granted bail on April 21, 2026, after Anwar Khan provided a bail bond of Rs. 25,000 and a surety of the same amount. Justice Girish Kathpalia presided over the case at a hearing where he took into account the submissions made by counsel from both sides.

Justice Kathpalia highlighted the lack of clear accusations or evidence regarding Anwar Khan’s involvement in the murder, stating, “Considering the circumstances, especially the role of the accused with no clear allegation… I find no reason to further deprive liberty to the accused.” He emphasised that the absence of specific charges warranted the release of Anwar Khan.

The ruling raised questions about the prosecution’s case, particularly regarding one Salman alias Bonchi, who has not been named an accused despite purportedly facilitating the shooters. The judge expressed surprise that Salman could be a witness instead of an accused, noting the inconsistencies in the investigation.

Background of the Murder Case

The case revolves around the tragic murder of Nadir Shah, an Afghan-origin gym trainer, who was shot outside his gym located in Greater Kailash in September 2024. The Delhi High Court had previously requested a status report from the Delhi police on March 17, 2026, as the investigation was ongoing. Anwar Khan’s detention had raised concerns regarding the legitimacy of the accusations against him.

On February 21, 2026, the Patiala House Court denied Anwar Khan’s regular bail request, prompting him to seek relief from the higher court. The Special Public Prosecutor, Akhand Pratap Singh, represented the Delhi police during the hearings, while advocates Sulaiman Mohd Khan and M M Khan were counsel for Anwar Khan.

Anwar Khan’s arrest took place on April 23, 2025, based on statements given by Salman alias Bonchi. Following his arrest, the Delhi police submitted a charge sheet on December 11, 2024, which listed 14 accused individuals but did not implicate Anwar Khan in any criminal activity related to the murder.

Legal Proceedings and Implications

Anwar Khan’s legal counsel argued that he had been in custody for a year without being linked to any incriminating evidence in the charge sheet, which spanned 2000 pages. The absence of substantial evidence against him was a key argument in the bail application, prompting the court to reconsider the earlier denial.

The judge took into account the prosecution’s inconsistent claims and the implications of the investigations, specifically in light of the statements recorded by Salman alias Bonchi. Although these statements mentioned Anwar Khan, the court was not convinced that they constituted sufficient grounds for a continued denial of bail.

The court’s decision to grant bail to Anwar Khan raises significant questions about the case’s handling by law enforcement and the judicial system. The proceedings will likely continue to be monitored as they develop, especially regarding the roles of all individuals involved and how evidence is presented in court.
