Delhi HC to Hear Cockroach Janta Party Challenge against Blocking Their Social Media Accounts

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi High Court is set to hear a challenge from Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), regarding the blocking of the party’s account on X, formerly known as Twitter. The court session is scheduled for May 29, with Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav presiding over the matter. Dipke has claimed that the Central Government’s actions to block the party’s social media presence were motivated by national security concerns.

Details of Allegations

In his legal plea, Dipke alleges that the government not only blocked the official X handle of the CJP but also compromised various other digital platforms associated with the party. He reports that the party’s Instagram account was hacked, leading to a loss of access. Additionally, he asserts that his personal Instagram account was similarly affected, and a backup account for the party was removed as part of what he describes as a broader offensive against this satirical political movement.

Dipke expressed his frustrations through his personal X handle, asserting that multiple social media accounts related to the CJP were targeted. His public posts highlighted the importance of these digital platforms for the movement, indicating that the actions taken against them were unjust and detrimental. The party is known for its meme-driven commentary on governance and societal issues, which has recently attracted considerable attention from a younger demographic.

The Cockroach Janta Party’s online presence has reportedly garnered the support of nearly 10 lakh individuals. Furthermore, Dipke mentioned that around six lakh users of the platform signed a petition demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in light of allegations surrounding a NEET-UG paper leak controversy. These events have seemingly heightened the stakes of the ongoing legal battle.

Concerns Over Digital Censorship

In his plea, Dipke has raised concerns regarding what he perceives as selective targeting by social media platforms against accounts linked to his party. These allegations surround a narrative of censorship and control over political discourse, which Dipke argues limits the party’s ability to communicate with supporters and engage in public dialogue. The lack of access to digital platforms is seen as a significant blow to the party’s ability to operate publicly.

By filing this case, Dipke seeks judicial assistance to address what he views as unlawful actions taken by the authorities. He claims that these measures reflect a “dictatorial” attitude by the government towards political dissent and satire, which could undermine the principles of free expression and democracy. His legal representation aims to challenge the legitimacy of the government’s actions and restore access to all blocked platforms associated with the party.

The outcome of this case could have implications for digital political engagement in India, particularly for emerging political movements that rely heavily on social media to connect with their audience. The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding digital freedom and the responsibilities of social media platforms in facilitating or hindering political expression within the country.
