Delhi Government Introduces Rs 10 Lakh Cashless Health Cover for Construction Workers’ Families

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has announced a new health scheme aimed at providing cashless medical treatment for registered construction workers and their family members. The initiative offers coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh, which was confirmed during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on June 23, 2026. This enhancement in health services comes as a significant move to support those employed in the construction sector.

Financial Commitment and Beneficiary Details

This health cover is expected to represent an annual expenditure of approximately Rs 200 crore, benefiting around 2.70 lakh registered construction workers and their families. Collectively, the scheme is anticipated to cover nearly 10 lakh individuals. Under the structured plan, each registered worker is entitled to medical treatments worth up to Rs 2 lakh at designated hospitals, while the total coverage for families can reach as high as Rs 10 lakh.

According to Gupta, one of the primary advantages of this scheme is its cashless feature, which alleviates the financial pressure often experienced by workers and their dependents when accessing healthcare. The health scheme extends coverage to spouses, children, and parents of the workers, thereby encompassing the entire family unit in the support system.

Furthermore, the initiative includes provisions for annual health check-ups for the registered workers and their spouses. In addition, beneficiaries will enjoy free outpatient and inpatient services, diagnostic and laboratory facilities, as well as emergency medical assistance and referral services. This comprehensive approach seeks to provide a robust healthcare solution for construction workers.

Enhancing Healthcare Access and Monitoring

To ensure that healthcare services are readily available, Gupta mentioned the deployment of mobile medical units at construction sites and in populous areas where many workers reside. This approach is intended to facilitate easier access to urgent medical care and routine health services. By bringing healthcare closer to the workers, the government aims to enhance the overall well-being of a vital workforce.

The initiative also includes the creation of digital health records for beneficiaries, as well as the development of a modern tracking system. These innovations are designed to improve transparency in the delivery of services and assist in the effective monitoring of healthcare access for users. The move is seen as essential for reinforcing the government’s commitment to the health of construction workers.

Gupta underscored the importance of this health initiative, stating that construction workers play a critical role in the development of the capital. Recognising their vulnerability to various health issues due to their working conditions—including exposure to dust, chemicals, and physical strain—this scheme is a significant step towards addressing the long-standing lack of comprehensive health support services for these workers and their families.
