Delhi Experiences 39°C Temperatures Yet Ranks Outside Top 25 Hottest Cities

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi recorded a temperature of 39 degrees Celsius at 10:00 am on Monday, yet it notably did not feature in the list of the 25 hottest cities in India. The national capital, despite its sweltering conditions, is overshadowed by numerous cities in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, and West Bengal that experienced notably higher temperatures.

Leading the rankings, Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh reported the highest temperature at 44°C, tied with Banda and Mirzapur, also registering 44°C. These cities are experiencing extreme heat conditions, indicative of the broader heatwave affecting much of northern and central India.

Other cities, including Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh, recorded temperatures of 43°C. Various locations like Varanasi, Jhansi, Sirsa, Sasaram, Etawah, Chhatarpur, Auraiya, Jaunpur, and Rewa reported similar readings, highlighting a significant rise in heat levels.

Impact of Weather Conditions and Heatwave Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings regarding severe heatwave conditions that are expected to persist in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Bihar for the coming days. Certain areas may exceed 45°C if cloud cover and storm activities do not occur.

Weather experts attribute the rising temperatures to several factors, including dry continental winds, intense solar heating, and the lack of widespread thunderstorm activity. These elements have accelerated the temperature rise in landlocked regions, as areas without coastal influence warm up more quickly in prolonged sunny conditions.

In contrast, despite Delhi’s extreme heat, the temperature has been slightly tempered due to varying wind patterns and the possibility of isolated dust storms and thunderstorms forecasted later in the evening.

Health Advisories and Public Safety Measures

Meteorologists have highlighted the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to such intense temperatures, emphasising that heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke are significant concerns, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Residents are urged to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activities during the most sweltering parts of the day.

With more than half of the top 25 hottest cities located in Uttar Pradesh, the state continues to dominate India’s heat map, revealing alarming trends in climatic conditions. Experts encourage the public to heed advisories to mitigate health risks associated with heat exposure.

As reports suggest the continuation of this heatwave, ongoing monitoring of weather conditions and temperature patterns remains essential. Citizens are advised to stay informed and take precautions to ensure safety during these extreme weather circumstances.
