Corruption Allegations Surround Karnataka Congress MLA’s Cabinet Prospects

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Bengaluru resident has made a formal complaint to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, calling for an independent investigation into alleged corruption involving Congress MLA HC Mahadevappa, who previously served as the Social Welfare Minister. The complaint claims there was misuse of welfare funds, manipulation of tenders associated with the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS), and the fabrication of documents during Mahadevappa’s official capacity.

The representation to the Governor demands a thorough and expedited inquiry into the awarding of several high-value tenders. It also seeks validation of the authenticity of documents submitted by contractors involved in these processes. The complainant has urged that action be taken against any individuals found culpable and has called for Mahadevappa’s disqualification from the Legislative Assembly if the claims are substantiated.

Political Context and Responses

This complaint arises at a politically charged moment, with Mahadevappa being viewed as a potential candidate for a position in the anticipated expansion of the Karnataka cabinet, expected by the end of June. The allegations have emerged amid extensive lobbying within the Congress party prior to this reshuffle. There have been indications of factional disputes within the ruling party, tied to the contest for ministerial roles.

Karnataka BJP President BY Vijayendra has alleged that the race for ministerial positions has ignited further internal conflicts within Congress. In a statement made to India Today, Vijayendra criticised the Congress-led government, asserting that the past three years have been dominated by power struggles rather than effective governance. He further claimed that newly appointed Chief Minister DK Shivakumar would be more preoccupied with maintaining his position than addressing governance challenges.

Vijayendra also alleged that numerous Congress legislators are currently in Delhi, seeking potential ministerial appointments. He stated that Chief Minister Shivakumar is attempting to exclude leaders aligned with former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, including Mahadevappa and BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan, from the upcoming cabinet.
