Congress Slams New Labour Codes, Seeks Parliamentary Review

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Congress party has raised significant concerns regarding the newly introduced Labour Codes, labelling them as “black laws.” The party alleges that these regulations favour corporate interests at the expense of working-class rights. They demand that the codes be reviewed by Parliament to ensure fair treatment of labourers.

KC Venugopal, a general secretary of the Congress, emphasised the urgent issue by citing the recent mass sacking of approximately 900 employees at CorroHealth, a healthcare company based in Kerala. He described the incident as a disturbing indicator of how the new Labour Codes could affect workers, claiming that it represents a broader threat to India’s workforce.

In his statements, Venugopal noted that the abrupt terminations, which included the issuing of Full and Final Termination Letters, were conducted with inadequate compensation for the affected staff. The Congress leader further asserted that the Industrial Relations Code (IR Code) has defined a ‘worker’ as anyone earning below Rs 18,000, effectively excluding many skilled professionals, including those in the IT sector.

Mass Termination Incident Sparks Outrage

The termination of nearly 900 medical coding professionals from CorroHealth occurred when the employees arrived at work on Friday morning. This sudden action elicited widespread outrage among the workforce and prompted immediate intervention from the Kerala government, highlighting the serious implications of the Labour Codes.

Reports indicate that the affected employees were dismissed without prior notification and were not afforded the contractual notice periods outlined in their employment agreements. This has raised questions not only about the legality of such actions but also about the broader impact of the Labour Codes on job security.

Venugopal accused the Modi government of crafting legislation that prioritises corporate interests over the rights of dedicated workers who are vital to the nation’s economy. He called for Parliament to reassess the Labour Codes in order to restore fairness and protect the labour force from potential exploitation.

Concerns Over Contractual Employment Provisions

The Congress party has voiced additional concerns regarding specific aspects of the Labour Codes, notably the introduction of “fixed-term contracts.” These provisions are seen as a means to facilitate the conversion of permanent roles into temporary positions, making job security tenuous for many workers across various sectors.

Venugopal described this legislative move as detrimental, labelling it a strategic effort by the Modi government to cater to powerful corporate interests, while undermining the welfare of labourers who contribute significantly to the country’s development. He insisted that these laws must be revised and redirected to prioritise the rights of the working class.

As the debate over the Labour Codes continues, the Congress party remains resolute in its stance that a more equitable approach must be adopted, ensuring that legislation does not disproportionately impact the working population while benefiting powerful corporate entities.
