Congress MP Criticises N Chandrababu Naidu Over Political Decisions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress MP Manickam Tagore has accused Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu of potentially compromising the state’s future for his political survival. His remarks, made on April 16, highlight Naidu’s support for the Delimitation Bill, which Tagore claims undermines the representation of southern states in the Indian Parliament.

Tagore took to social media platform X to express his concerns, alleging that Naidu has betrayed significant figures in his political life, including his father-in-law, former Chief Minister NT Rama Rao. He pointed out that Naidu’s current actions demonstrate a prioritisation of power over principles.

The Congress MP described Naidu’s stance on the Delimitation Bill as one that could lead to a diminished voice for Andhra Pradesh and other southern states in crucial national discussions. He asserted that such a compromise is detrimental to the political landscape of the region.

Concerns Over Women’s Representation

Tagore labelled Naidu’s support for the Delimitation Bill as a “calculated surrender”. He stated that this move could hinder the representation of backward communities, particularly women, in Parliament. According to Tagore, Naidu is effectively preventing backward classes from gaining seats in legislative bodies by endorsing this bill without the results of a comprehensive caste-based census.

He expressed that Naidu’s approach lacks genuine leadership, pointing out that instead of addressing the pressing issues of representation, Naidu is focusing on discussions about family size. Tagore argued that this is a diversion from the more pressing need to confront systemic injustices affecting marginalised groups.

Tagore mentioned the upcoming plans for the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act, intended to facilitate increased representation of women ahead of the 2029 General Elections. This proposal comes with the intention of amending the 2023 Act and separating the delimitation process from the census scheduled for 2027.

Future Legislative Changes Proposed

The government plans to expand the number of seats in the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850, proposing 815 seats for states and 35 for Union Territories. The move is part of a broader initiative to enhance representation within the national legislature.

A special session of Parliament is scheduled to take place from April 16 to April 18, where discussions regarding these legislative changes are anticipated. The outcomes of this session could significantly impact the political framework of the country and the representation of various communities within it.

Naidu’s position as Chief Minister has drawn considerable scrutiny, particularly as these developments unfold. The ongoing political dialogue regarding the Delimitation Bill will likely remain a pivotal issue as legislators navigate complex representation challenges leading up to the next electoral cycle.
