CBFC Clears Supergirl With U/A 16+ Rating After Censoring Language and Visuals

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has exercised its authority to modify the Hollywood film Supergirl, which is set to release on June 26. The film has been granted a U/A 16+ certificate but required alterations to various audio elements. Notably, the board instructed the removal of terms deemed inappropriate, including the words ‘screwed’, ‘b***h’, and ‘balls’.

Additionally, the word ‘wh**e’ was also subject to censorship. This development comes after an exclusive screening of 30 minutes of footage from Supergirl was held for selected fans in Mumbai on June 20. Reports indicate that during this event, one of the scenes featured the dialogue containing the word ‘wh**e’, which was presented in a humoristic manner by the main characters.

Furthermore, the visual depiction of a middle finger was also removed from the film. Following the implementation of these changes, Supergirl received its clearance on June 23. The official length of the film is noted to be 109.58 minutes, translating to a viewing time of 1 hour, 49 minutes, and 58 seconds.

Impact on Film’s Showcasing

Reports indicate the film initially faced challenges in securing screening slots due to the substantial focus multiplexes placed on the recently released Hindi film, Welcome To The Jungle. The competition for showcasing was reportedly significant, affecting Supergirl’s visibility in theatres.

However, the situation appears to have improved within a day of the initial reports. Despite this, sources within the trade have suggested that Warner Bros continues to encounter difficulties in obtaining the desired level of showcasing for Supergirl across various venues.

In light of the competitive landscape, the successful rollout and performance of Supergirl may hinge on its ability to capture audience interest amid strong competition from local releases.

Exclusive Screening Highlights

The exclusive preview of Supergirl in Mumbai saw a positive response from attendees, during which participants responded enthusiastically to the performances, particularly those of actors Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa. The event was marked by cheers and applause, reflecting a level of anticipation for the film’s official release.

This session not only showcased select footage from the film but also served to generate buzz around the production ahead of its theatrical debut. The reactions from the audience may provide valuable insights for the filmmakers regarding the film’s appeal and potential box office performance.

The advance reactions and modified content point to the evolving dynamics of film certification and audience expectations in India. As the film landscape continues to shift, the implications of censorship and studio strategies remain critical areas of observation for both industry professionals and viewers alike.
