Canada-Returned Man Punches Mother to Death Over Marriage in Ahmedabad

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Canada-returned man’s obsession with marriage ended in a horrific crime in Ahmedabad’s Ghatlodia area on Tuesday night. Furious that his parents were not finding him a bride, 31-year-old Vraj Contractor allegedly rained punches on his mother, Parul, until she collapsed. The 55-year-old woman was rushed to hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Domestic Violence Ignored Until Tragedy Struck

The incident took place inside their Vardhmankrupa flats residence near Sattadhar crossroads. Vraj, who moved to Canada in 2018 on a student visa, had studied and worked part time before returning to Ahmedabad earlier this year. Since then, he had been living with his parents and 25-year-old sister Nakshi, while his father continued his job as a hotel manager in Gandhinagar and Nakshi worked at a stock brokerage firm.

Police investigations revealed that Vraj’s aggressive behaviour was not new. Inspector K N Bhukhan of Sola police said that the accused had attacked his mother four to five times in recent weeks. Only two days earlier, he had fought with his sister and allegedly hurled a steel water bottle at her. Despite these frequent violent outbursts, the family did not approach the police.

On Tuesday, the quarrel escalated fatally when Vraj’s demand for immediate marriage once again turned into a heated argument with his mother. With his father away at work, frustration spiralled into rage. According to police, he landed repeated punches on Parul’s back and stomach, causing massive internal bleeding. Though Nakshi and a neighbour rushed her to a nearby hospital, she was declared brought dead.

Complaint by Sister Leads to Arrest

Following Parul’s death, Nakshi lodged a complaint against her elder brother. Sola police immediately arrested Vraj under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder. During questioning, he reportedly admitted his guilt and even expressed remorse for killing his mother.

Inspector Bhukhan said, “Vraj will undergo medical tests to review his psychological and other conditions. He has said that he feels guilty about his actions.” Police confirmed that while Vraj does not have a prior criminal record, his behavioural changes after returning from Canada indicated possible underlying mental health issues that were left untreated.

Relatives of the family expressed shock over the tragedy, stating that Parul had been patient with her son despite his repeated anger and aggression. Local residents described her as a quiet homemaker who never hinted at the extent of domestic violence she was facing.

Social Concerns Beyond One Family

This chilling case has raised broader questions about mental health, social pressure and the culture of marriage obsession. Officers noted that Vraj’s insistence on marriage, despite his unstable financial and emotional condition, turned into compulsive behaviour. Experts stressed that families must take behavioural changes seriously and seek professional help instead of letting repeated violence pass under silence.

The Ghatlodia case has shaken the city and highlighted the emotional strain on young Indians returning from abroad without clear direction. For now, Vraj remains in custody as the investigation continues, but the tragedy stands as a stark reminder of how unchecked anger and obsession can destroy families in an instant.
