In her post, Cameron conveyed her heartfelt sorrow for those affected by the tragedy, stating, “One year ago today, the tragic Air India crash claimed 260 lives, including 52 British nationals. I will never forget arriving in Ahmedabad and visiting the site on that day.” Her message highlighted the difficult circumstances surrounding the event and the profound impact it had on the families involved.

Expressing solidarity with the bereaved, she acknowledged the effort of her diplomatic team who provided crucial support during the aftermath. Cameron stated, “My thoughts are with all the families affected, and I thank my team who stood up immediately to support them and have continued to do so.” Her visit included laying floral wreaths at the accident site in Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, as a mark of respect for the deceased.

Details of the Catastrophic Incident

The Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, tragically crashed shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, 2025. The accident occurred merely 32 seconds into its flight on the route to London Gatwick, leading to one of the most severe aviation disasters in the region’s history. In total, 260 lives were lost, comprising 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground.

Among the notable victims of the incident was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, highlighting the tragic impact of the crash on both personal and political levels. The extensive loss of life has left a deep scar in the community, prompting calls for improved safety measures in aviation.

In conjunction with the anniversary, Air India announced that it had completed interim compensation payments to a considerable number of families affected by the crash. The airline provided ₹25 lakh (approximately 21,000 GBP) to families of the deceased, aiming to alleviate immediate financial burdens following the tragedy. Reports indicate that payments have been disbursed to 96 per cent of families of the deceased.

Ongoing Support and Final Compensation Process

Air India revealed that processes for final compensation are currently underway after the majority of interim payments have been executed. The airline stated that it is engaging with families, emphasising that there are no deadlines for accepting their offers, ensuring that individuals can take the time needed to consider their options.

Additionally, the Tata Group has been actively involved in providing support through the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust, which aims to assist those impacted by the crash. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran announced ex-gratia payments of ₹1 crore to the families of each deceased, extending beyond legal compensation obligations. Reports show that 91 per cent of families have received these payments, but some cases remain pending due to documentation issues.

Moreover, Air India has focused on respectfully returning personal belongings of the victims, ensuring a diligent and careful process. Over 22,000 items have been catalogued and preserved, with many already returned to the families of the deceased. The airline has maintained transparent communication with families throughout this process, providing regular updates via email and a dedicated website.

As families continue to navigate the aftermath of the tragedy, they are also awaiting the results of the official investigation, which is reportedly nearing completion. The findings from the inquiry will offer further clarity on the circumstances of the crash.
