Participation Reflects Growing Sports Culture

During the opening address, Governor Acharya noted the impressive turnout of nearly 1,200 athletes representing various regions of the state. He stated that such high levels of participation demonstrate the increasing sporting culture within Assam and play a crucial role in the state’s aim to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. The Governor emphasised the championship as a key platform for discovering and nurturing prospective sporting talent who may later achieve success for both Assam and India.

The Governor expressed pride in the legacy of eminent athletes from Assam, such as Bhogeshwar Baruah, Hima Das, Amlan Borgohain, and Moumita Mondal. He also mentioned boxing champions Lovlina Borgohain and Shiva Thapa, as well as renowned archer Jayanta Talukdar, acknowledging that their accomplishments serve as motivation for younger generations looking to excel in sports. In his remarks, the Governor called upon the athletes to maintain the highest standards of sportsmanship, integrity, and fairness throughout the championship. He pointed out that while winning medals is a sign of success, it is perseverance and discipline that truly mould responsible citizens.

Government Initiatives Support Sporting Development

Governor Acharya referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the sporting environment in India. He articulated that programmes like Khelo India, the Fit India Movement, and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) have significantly altered the landscape of sports in the country. The Governor acknowledged the role of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in advancing world-class sports infrastructure and fostering grassroots talent, efforts that have been instrumental in creating a dynamic sports ecosystem in Assam.
