At least three people were injured after a bomb exploded during a rally organised by Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar, near Dhaka, on Monday night.

The explosion occurred during the first day of the NCP’s July March, a nationwide campaign organised to press for several demands and mark the second anniversary of the student-led protests against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Bomb Explodes During NCP Rally In Savar

The NCP said the explosion occurred at around 9:45 pm while its post-march rally was underway at the Savar Thana Stand Eidgah field.

“Terrorists detonated a bomb at the post-march rally venue of the NCP in Savar. The explosion took place at around 9:45 PM on Monday while the rally was underway at the Savar Thana Stand Eidgah field,” the party said in a statement.

At least three people were injured in the explosion. The rally was organised by the NCP, a newly formed political party led by students who opposed the government of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

NCP Launches Nationwide July March

The explosion occurred on the opening day of the July March, which the NCP has planned across Bangladesh during the month.

The campaign seeks the implementation of a referendum, creation of jobs, resolution of the power crisis, measures to control commodity prices and stronger protection of the country’s borders.

The NCP had earlier announced plans to hold the nationwide march to mark the second anniversary of the student protests against Hasina.

India Reviewing Sheikh Hasina Extradition Request

Hasina left Bangladesh for India on August 5, 2024, following the political upheaval triggered by the student-led protests.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs said on April 17 that it was officially reviewing a formal request seeking the extradition of the former Bangladesh Prime Minister through established legal and judicial channels.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal announced the development as India sought to stabilise relations with the newly established government in Dhaka following the political changes triggered by the “July Revolution.”
