BMC Launches Dry Waste Processing Centre in Andheri to Reduce Landfill Burden

In a significant step towards efficient waste management and reducing the load on its landfills. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated a new dry waste segregation and processing centre in Andheri. The facility, operating under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, boasts a capacity to process 10 million tonnes of dry waste daily using scientific methods.

According to reports, the inauguration ceremony took place yesterday, May 14, 2025. The event occurred on the eve of World Environment Day. The event graced by the presence of BMC Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone-3), Mr. Vishwas Mote.

Assistant Commissioner of K (East) ward, Mr. Nitin Shukla, was also present at the event. He was joined with representatives from Hindustan Unilever, Xintiyo, and Dalmia Polypro Limited, as well as concerned BMC officials and employees.

Strategic Move to Minimize Landfill Waste

As of now, a substantial amount of waste collected from various parts of Mumbai. It is transported daily to different landfill sites for processing. The newly established dry waste segregation and processing center, located on Mahakali Caves Road in Andheri. The initiative aims to alleviate this burden on the city’s landfills.

Public-Private Partnership for Sustainable Waste Management

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mr. Vishwas Mote while speaking at the event highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. “This center has been developed in partnership with Hindustan Unilever, Xintiyo, and Dalmia Polypro Limited under a Public-Private Partnership model,” he stated. “It will have the capacity to segregate and process 10 million tonnes of dry waste every day.”

Promoting Green Initiatives

Following the inauguration, Mr. Mote emphasised the importance of a green environment by planting saplings within the center’s premises. He also guided young volunteers and attendees, underscoring the significance of waste segregation at the source.

According to reports, his new facility marks a crucial step by the BMC towards adopting sustainable waste management practices and minimising the environmental impact of the city’s waste.
