The CSR Journal Magazine

Shankar Ghosh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Siliguri Assembly constituency, participated in the voting process on April 23. Following his casting of the vote, he expressed strong confidence in his party’s ability to secure a majority in the ongoing West Bengal elections. Ghosh spoke to ANI, urging citizens to not only exercise their democratic right but to do so in a peaceful manner.

In his remarks, Ghosh emphasised the importance of maintaining a tranquil environment during the voting process. He stated, “Voting is going on peacefully. I hope it will continue this way. Everyone must exercise their vote. I want peaceful voting. This time we will form the government.” His statements reflect an optimistic outlook regarding the outcome of the election.

Contests and Tensions in Polling Stations

The political landscape in Siliguri features Ghosh contesting against notable opponents, including Goutam Deb from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Saradindu Chakraborty from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Congress’s Alok Dhara. While the atmosphere at many polling stations remained calm, tensions did arise in specific locations.

At one polling station, Jagadish Chandra Vidyapith, supporters of Ghosh and TMC’s Deb were reportedly involved in a verbal confrontation. In response, security personnel present at the venue intervened swiftly to manage the situation and disperse the crowd, ensuring the voting process continued without significant disruption.

In another incident in Murshidabad, clashes were reportedly triggered when TMC workers vocally challenged the police following the arrival of Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) founder Humayun Kabir. Tensions escalated, prompting the deployment of additional security forces to maintain order during the polling. Authorities stated that while mild force was used to clear the area, the overall situation remained under control.

Ongoing Elections in West Bengal

The West Bengal Assembly elections are being held in two phases, with the first encompassing 152 constituencies and the second phase set for April 29. According to the Election Commission of India, approximately 1,478 candidates are contesting in the first round. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.

This election cycle is particularly significant, featuring a high-stakes contest between the incumbent Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is vying for a fourth consecutive term, and the BJP, which is striving to form the government after securing 77 seats in the previous election.

In light of the current political dynamics, the competition is expected to be intense as both parties mobilise their supporters and reinforce their positions regarding key issues affecting the electorate.
