West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya has characterised his party as akin to the holy river Ganga, in response to allegations that it functions as a “washing machine” for politicians defecting from other parties. He made these statements in Kolkata on May 10, as he addressed criticisms arising from comments made by suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Riju Dutta. Dutta recently expressed admiration for BJP’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, which has been interpreted as a sign of potential political defection.

While responding to the situation, Bhattacharya stated that the BJP is witnessing an influx of interest from disgruntled TMC members who wish to join its ranks. However, he clarified that the party is not currently accepting new members from the ruling party. He noted that there is a significant number of phone calls and inquiries from TMC leaders expressing their desire to align with the BJP, but emphasized that a stringent vetting process is in place.

Bhattacharya explained that the BJP does not simply welcome any new entrant; instead, the party has adopted a methodical approach akin to controlling access to the sacred waters of the Ganga. He reassured supporters that the BJP is discerning in choosing who can join, stating, “Right now, the door is shut for any TMC leader.” This approach aims to maintain the integrity of the party amid such transitions.

BJP’s Focus on Restoring Democracy and Central Schemes

During his remarks, Bhattacharya highlighted the primary aim of the BJP in West Bengal as restoring democracy, which he claims has been compromised under TMC’s rule. The BJP leader asserted that plans to implement central government initiatives, particularly those designed to assist economically disadvantaged citizens, will be prioritised now that the TMC no longer holds power. He suggested that the previous governance by the TMC has hindered the realisation of the Prime Minister’s vision for the state, due to what he termed “divisive politics”. He reiterated that the current BJP administration will undertake necessary actions to foster a more welcoming atmosphere for investors.

In addition, Bhattacharya’s criticism extended towards the TMC’s handling of the state’s ecological concerns. He accused the ruling party of undermining the ecological balance, stating that the BJP aims to restore environmental integrity. He portrayed the TMC’s political tactics as detrimental to the societal fabric of West Bengal, advocating for a governance model that separates political influence from administrative duties.

Bhattacharya asserted that the BJP is committed to ensuring that political entities do not permeate public administration, a situation he claims has been prevalent under TMC governance. He stated, “This doesn’t happen in a BJP-ruled state,” reinforcing his vision of a streamlined and efficient governance framework.
