BJP May Achieve Historic Victory in West Bengal Assembly Elections Ending 15-Year TMC Rule

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to achieve a landmark triumph in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, bringing an end to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year tenure and significantly altering the state’s political scenario. This victory will be notable as it will mark the first time the BJP will gain control in West Bengal, which had previously been dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The trends indicate a monumental change in voter sentiment, as observed from the overwhelming electoral turnout of 92.47%.

As vote counting proceeds, the BJP reportedly leads in 193 out of 294 seats, while the TMC is leading in 94. Other parties, including Congress, CPI(M), and Aam Janata Unnayan Party, hold one to two seats each. This election result reflects a growing discontent among the electorate towards the TMC, comparable to sentiments experienced during the 34 years of Left Front rule.

Key Factors Behind BJP’s Electoral Success

If the BJP wins, Central to the party’s electoral success will be its aggressive “Welfare War,” particularly through its manifesto, “Bhoroshar Shopoth” (Pledge of Trust). The BJP proposed a monthly welfare payment of Rs 3,000, significantly higher than the TMC’s Rs 1,500 plan. This decision was designed to attract the substantial female voter base in the state. Additionally, the BJP’s intention to implement the 7th Pay Commission and address all Dearness Allowance arrears within a set period appealed to state government employees, many of whom felt neglected by the current administration.

Another pivotal element is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which resulted in the removal of approximately 90 lakh names from the electoral rolls. While the TMC labelled this process a disenfranchisement of certain communities, particularly Muslims and Matuas, the BJP portrayed it as a necessary step to eliminate illegal registrations. This exercise reduced the electorate from about 7.66 crore to 7.04 crore, with a significant number of removals being attributed to absentee or deceased voters.

Security measures were considerably heightened compared to previous elections, with 2,407 companies of Central Armed Police Forces deployed, amounting to around 2.4 lakh personnel. This increase aimed to create a secure environment for voters and was viewed as a protective barrier against potential intimidation during the electoral process. The central oversight during the voting and counting phases has been marked, reflecting tighter control over the situation compared to past elections.

BJP’s Targeted Campaign Strategies

The BJP’s victory can be attributed to an extensive and focused campaign strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on April 19, which involved a rally encompassing key regions such as Bishnupur and Purulia, set the tone for the party’s outreach efforts. His discussions on “TMC Syndicates” and the issue of “Cut Money” resonated with a younger demographic that has been frustrated by stagnant industrial growth.

An unexpected cultural moment emerged during these rallies when Modi shared jhalmuri, leading to widespread conversation and online interest in the street food. The campaign also placed significant emphasis on the development agenda, promising one crore jobs and advocating for a “Double-engine government” that could facilitate growth at both the state and central levels.

The BJP’s ability to engage local sentiments proved crucial. Promises to recognise regional languages and implement solutions for North Bengal were aimed at dismantling the TMC’s traditional dominance in regional politics. While the TMC attempted to counter with extensive campaigning, including 94 rallies by Mamata Banerjee, the BJP’s focused approach ultimately proved more effective.

The implications of this electoral outcome are significant for the opposition, particularly the INDIA Bloc, as Mamata Banerjee’s standing as a counter to the BJP’s national presence faces uncertainty in the lead-up to the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
