Bihar Gang-Rape Incident Leads to Suspension of Police Official

The CSR Journal Magazine

The chief of the local police station in Begusarai district, Bihar, has been suspended due to claims of negligence connected to the brutal gang-rape and torture of a 30-year-old woman. Following public outrage and accusations regarding police inaction, Deputy Inspector General Shailesh Kumar ordered the suspension. The incident has sparked significant concern in the community regarding the safety of women and the responsibilities of law enforcement.

Details of the Assault and Survivor’s Condition

The assault occurred on the night of June 11, when the survivor allegedly went outside her home to use the toilet. According to her complaint, five men approached her, overpowering her and dragging her to a secluded area where they bound her hands and feet. Reportedly, the men assaulted her and took turns raping her, subsequently inflicting injuries using a sharp object before abandoning her at the scene.

Family members quickly took the survivor to a local hospital, where she received treatment and was discharged the following day. However, on June 17, experiencing severe and continuous pain, she was readmitted to the district hospital. Medical examinations revealed that doctors discovered a cartridge-like object, a stone, and a piece of wood inside her body during an ultrasound.

DIG Kumar confirmed that an FIR had been lodged and that a medical examination was conducted by a medical board. He further noted that authorities were anticipating the medical report to proceed with the investigation. A special investigation team has been assembled to apprehend the individuals alleged to have carried out the assault.

Family Claims Previous Attacks and Local Criminal Activity

The survivor’s husband informed reporters that he had been locked inside a room during the assault, preventing him from assisting his wife. He identified five men from their village as the perpetrators of the crime. The family named three suspects: Ram Babu Nishad, Suraj Kumar, and Nitish Kumar, while the other two men remain unnamed.

The husband asserted that these suspects are known local criminals with prior records of theft and other offences. He also mentioned an earlier incident in March, where several men attempted to sexually assault his wife. When that attempt failed, they allegedly attacked the family and looted their home. Although a police case was registered for this March incident, the husband claimed that the suspects obtained bail and subsequently targeted his wife again due to what he perceives as inadequate action from local police.

Thus far, police officials have not issued a public response to these allegations regarding the failure to act effectively following the initial incident in March. The lack of confidence in law enforcement to protect citizens, particularly women, has heightened following this recent case, calling for urgent attention to police accountability and community safety measures.
