Bengaluru HAL Airport Launches India’s First Precision Helicopter Landing System

Bengaluru’s HAL Airport has become the pioneer in India by operationalising the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure. This advanced system, specifically developed for helicopters, utilises satellite-based navigation to enhance flight accuracy and safety.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) formulated this state-of-the-art navigation procedure, which underwent rigorous flight trials by HAL test pilots. Only after satisfactory validation did the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) grant its approval, marking a significant advancement in helicopter operations.

This innovation allows helicopters to adopt highly organised flight paths, which is particularly advantageous in adverse weather conditions. By improving navigation capabilities, this system aims to make helicopter operations considerably safer.

Operational Benefits of the New System

One notable advantage of the RNP CAT H system is its potential to vastly reduce the time taken for helicopter approaches. Previously, it took nearly twelve minutes for helicopters to complete their descent into HAL Airport. With the introduction of this upgraded procedure, the duration has decreased to approximately four minutes, increasing operational efficiency.

This reduction in time not only enhances the efficiency of helicopter operations but also promotes lower fuel consumption and, consequently, fewer emissions. Such improvements align with broader environmental goals within the aviation sector and showcase HAL Airport as a leader in adopting sustainable practices.

The RNP CAT H system allows helicopters to navigate around urban obstacles, including buildings and other terrain features, without compromising their flight paths. This capability provides added operational flexibility, especially in densely populated areas.

Furthermore, the system facilitates better integration of helicopter traffic with fixed-wing aircraft operations. This is anticipated to increase the overall airspace capacity at busy airports, contributing to smoother and quicker air traffic management.

Another essential benefit is the reduction of noise pollution over urban settings. With helicopters able to follow more precise flight paths, the noise impact on densely populated areas is minimised, addressing community concerns related to helicopter operations.

HAL Airport currently witnesses nearly fifty helicopter movements daily, establishing it as one of India’s busiest helicopter hubs. The successful deployment of the RNP CAT H procedure is viewed as a significant leap forward, effectively closing a long-existing gap in the country’s aviation infrastructure.

Aviation experts believe that the success of this approach could encourage similar satellite-based procedures to be adopted at other airports across India.
