Karnataka Plans Second Bengaluru Airport to Ease Rising Air Traffic

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, announced on 8 July 2026, that a second airport in Bengaluru will be developed in the southern part of the city. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion at the existing Kempegowda International Airport. Shivakumar explained that officials have been instructed to create a proposal for the central government after identifying a suitable site with lower land costs and manageable terrain.

While specific locations have yet to be disclosed, the Chief Minister clarified that the aim is to avoid any disruption to nearby villages and ensure that residents are not displaced during the project’s implementation. The discussions around the second airport have taken into account earlier proposed sites in the southern region of Bengaluru.

Shivakumar led a meeting involving Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil and senior officials focused on the airport’s development. Post-meeting, he expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring local communities remain undisturbed. He reiterated that villagers should not lose their homes to accommodate the new airport.

Financial and Technical Considerations

In light of the financial implications of the project, the Chief Minister stated that the selected site should ideally feature lower land prices. This consideration is aimed at minimising the financial burden on the state government while also ensuring that the project remains feasible from a technical standpoint. He mentioned that while compensation can be arranged for a few scattered houses, the overarching priority is preventing the displacement of entire villages.

In March, during the presentation of the state budget, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had highlighted plans for a second airport in Bengaluru as a strategic response to increased traffic at Kempegowda International Airport, recognised as the third largest airport in India. He mentioned that a feasibility report would be compiled following expert consultations with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

As part of this process, officials from AAI recently assessed three shortlisted sites for the new airport: two on Kanakapura Road near Harohalli in South Bengaluru and one on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala, situated to the west of the city. The government’s selection criteria for the new airport will prioritise cost-effectiveness, technical feasibility, and the minimisation of social disruption.

Community Impact and Future Planning

The Karnataka government’s approach to the airport project reflects a growing emphasis on community engagement and sustainable development. By ensuring that local populations are not adversely affected, authorities are aiming to foster goodwill and public support for the airport initiative. The Chief Minister’s reassurances regarding the displacement of villagers appear intended to address community concerns about potential upheaval.

As planning progresses, stakeholders in Bengaluru anticipate updates regarding site selection and project timelines. The focus remains on creating an infrastructural asset that not only meets the city’s aviation needs but also respects the local populace and environment. The project’s successful execution will hinge on careful planning and collaboration among governmental, technical, and community entities.

In summary, the announcement of a second airport represents a significant development for Bengaluru, characterised by an intent to balance operational needs with the well-being of its residents. As the project advances, its impacts will likely resonate throughout the region, shaping the future of air travel and infrastructure in Karnataka.
