As West Bengal prepares for a transition of power, the State Assembly is undergoing a significant transformation. Following the dissolution of the previous house, authorities have begun removing portraits of outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from ministerial chambers.
Currently, four key offices including those of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip, and Deputy Chief Whip have been temporarily sealed. On orders from the highest administrative levels, entry to these rooms is restricted through Friday. Normal operations are expected to resume only after the new government officially takes the oath of office.
Infrastructure Overhaul and Maintenance
Beyond the symbolic removal of photographs, the Assembly building is buzzing with maintenance activity. The Public Works Department (PWD) is overseeing a comprehensive cleanup and repair drive.
Work includes:
• Electrical Repairs: Fixing faulty switchboards and wiring.
• Climate Control: Servicing air conditioning units across various blocks.
• General Sanitation: A full-scale cleaning of the Assembly premises to welcome the incoming administration.
Heightened Security Measures
Security has been significantly bolstered throughout the complex. PWD officials are conducting frequent inspections of the Assembly Annex building, which sources suggest will house the new Chief Minister’s Secretariat.
Police presence has been doubled, with dedicated guards stationed specifically outside the corridors leading to the Chief Minister’s office.
Although the formal resignation process is underway, Governor R.N. Ravi has already dissolved the existing Assembly. Exercising his powers under Article 174(2)(b) of the Indian Constitution, the Governor issued the order following the election results. Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala confirmed the dissolution via an official statement, clearing the path for the new legislative body to be formed in the coming days.
